this is pretty cool, but i didn't really expect it to be an 8-bit ska-screamo double album

More cheesey monotonous 70s prog with mikael's sub-par clean vocals. Lacks contrast and everything else that made Opeth good

First of all "Opeth" continue to the same direction like the previous album..For me i'm not satisfy for that direction..This sound is not for me..But i understand "Michael"...He grow up...How long time play like that? With brutal vocals and extreme riffs?..The time goes by and he need to play like that..And all we must respect this. This album, for me is better than previous...For sure..But still worst from the old times..And for the music part,i don't hear something i never heard from "Opeth"..Some same melodies and same synthetics abilities..And this over the time really tired me...That album have high level technique and alternations on songs but i don't think is one of the best on this year..For the sound(because is not my type 70s progressive rock) and i heard again on some point the same melodies and the same synthetics formulas on songs...But is better than "Heritage"..That is the good thing....The songs " Eternal rains will come" "Cusp of eternity" and perhaps the best on this record "Voice of treason" is really great stuff...

As their 25th anniversary draws near, Opeth returns on a high note with "Pale Communion", an
eclectic mix of old-school blues, progressive hard rock and jazz fusion. As far as I am
concerned, these boys may finally start transcending metal. The memorable one-two punch of
"Eternal Rains Will Come" and "Cusp of Eternity" suggest new live staples in their ever-
adventurous catalog, while the mind-bending "Goblin" represents a new creative high for the
Swedish titans. And let's not forget the brilliant album closer "Faith in Others". If
"Watershed" hinted at change, and the underrated "Heritage" ushered in said change, then
"Pale Communion" completes and perfects this new-meets-old style. Very strange and
deliciously melodic, "Pale Communion" is yet another winner in Opeth's already perfect
career.

I've learned two things from listening to this album: 1) Heritage was a fluke 2) Opeth still
have the ability to surprise me. Best Opeth album since Ghost Reveries.

People complain. But here are the facts - this is better than Heritage. This is different from Watershed, Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park, etc. Admit it, if Mikael released this as a side project instead of calling it "Opeth" everyone would be eating it up and praising its absolute brilliance (just like Casualties of Cool).

Okay, I am not sure whether this is better than Heritagte or not. I enjoy it a lot but I believe Heritage was more diverse than this one. Maybe 5 listens are not yet enough (they were a little bit hasty tbh). It's definately the most different thing they've ever composed and it's definately not a bad album.

4.5 superbBen Kuettel | July 17th 14

Parts of this don't even sound like Opeth, they've never pushed themselves harder than they have here. Diverse, emotional, and at times heavy, this is Heritage new and improved, but manages to sound completely different. Very proggy and wonderful. 4.4/5

So I don't know enough piloting rodents to give a flying rat's arse about if its metal or prog or whatever, but think about this - most Opeth "fans" enjoyed Damnation and that had fuck all death metal on it. Why is this SO different? Just think about the music. If you don't like 70s prog DON'T listen to this album. If you didn't like Steven Wilson's Grace For Drowning album also don't listen to this album. If you want Death metal, listen to old Opeth or some other death metal band like Cannibal Corpse or whatever to satisfy your neanderthal-like deathy vocality urges and stop bitching about the band's choice to go a little more proggy.rRant aside, though I'm still not keen on Mikael's clean vocals compared to say Steven Wilson's if he'd made this album (it does sound like Mike has taken a few lessons from SW imho), the music itself is godly. Well done to the Opeth squadron with their well executed prog-hemoth of an album.

I've listened t it about 3 times now, gotta say it's more like a softer version of Ghost Reveries for me. It's way more "Opeth" than Heritage, and I'm glad about that. And I'm fine with the non-growling Akerfeldt. All in all, this is a great record. And it seems to be growing on me.

Listened to it a few times last night, overall it's quite enjoyable, and all leads into one another, and at times it just feels like one long song. This is also a negative, though, as at times, it gets a little lost in the un-adventurousness of it (if that's a word) at times. Not to say this isn't a great album, I really enjoy it, but it doesn't feel like a band progressing through their career, it sort of feels like a band putting out another album, just because it's been a few years. It feels a little uninspired, that being said, it's got some fantastic moments.

It's perfectly understandable and even desirable for an artist to explore new paths, new ideas on each album, however "Pale Communion" isn't a creative progression or the masterpiece of an experienced musician, it's just a collection of retro songs. After "Watershed" the band lost the contrast between heaviness and softness, which was basically the most interesting element of Mikael's music. It's a shame but Mikael is getting older and at this stage of his career he can do whatever he wants.

3.0 goodMarxman | July 17th 14

Takes what Heritage did and focuses and improves upon it. If you're looking for heavy,
there's barely a shred of even semi-heavy guitars on this album. Mikael's voice sounds
better than ever, but there's none of his excellent growls to be heard. The first 2 songs
'Eternal Rains Will Come' and 'Cusp of Eternity' are both excellent prog rock jams, but
after that the creativity and inventiveness completely dies and you're left with nearly 40
minutes of same-y boring prog wank. Not good prog wank, mind you, but the extremely
monotonous sort of prog wank.

The album is decent only because of the first 2 great songs and the overall high level of
musicianship, but look elsewhere if you want interesting and inventive prog rock/metal.
This is only a slight step up from Heritage in my opinion, but it's nowhere near as
interesting or diverse.

I know the IMN's will hate it, but it's a good album. If you are able to put aside their previous albums and judge it on it's own merits, then you should enjoy it. If you can't handle the lack teh metalz, then you might as well skip it. The guitar work is stellar. The production is crisp. It's just a really solid album from front to back.

On first listen this is amazing. Super prog. They have completely done away with the old Opeth sound, and they are now following the amazing albums of Stephen Wilson and Haken. They lost most of their founding members after "Ghost Reveries." They tried to continue their same sound with "Watershed" and that is their worst IMO. They tried to come into their own sound with "Heritage" and they have honed in on it completely with "Pale Communion" How can anyone expect it to be the same Opeth of old, with nearly none of the same members??
