From lunatic speed/thrash/metal/punk hardcore to low-tempo reggae, this album is a frenzied mix of two styles with more hits than misses. You won't get any faster riffs than 'Don't need it' or 'Sailin on' & the drumming is just insane. Lyrics are sung so fast as to be indecipherable and are more like sonic accompaniment than lead vocals. All sneers, yelps and high-pitched wailing sung like a machine gun at breakneck speed. But what really sets this album apart is the musicianship on display. Every crazed lick seems deliberately placed and there are some truly awesome slower numbers like 'The Regulator' which are almost traditional classic rock. The reggae songs make a welcome change of pace & give you a chance to catch your breath before the next maniacal crescendo of sound assaults your ears. Great album. Lots of fun, energy and old-school oomph!

Esentiall Hardcore recording, if you listen to this you have probably heard 90% of the riffs that will be used in later hardcore recordings. While the reggae songs give a nice touch the record some of the them especially I luv Jah could've been cut out or shortened. In a sea of short energetic hardcore tracks the song just feels very long and midly tedious to get through

You realize immediately that this album's tracks are instant earworms which never think twice about leaving the cranium. Bad Brains' one problem lies within the hardcore-esque songs: they're above-average, but suffer from being indistinct. Fortunately "Jah Calling," "Leaving Babylon," and "I Luv I Jah" have just enough reggae influences to balance out this release's unpredictable speed.

There is simply nothing wrong with this album: it is amazing! There is a great combination
of Hardcore Punk and Reggae on it, along with some metal elements on it, which works well in
my opinion. There was never a place where the album lost my attention. It is a complete
classic.

Bad Brains is like Jamaican/hard rock. The tracks vary from carribean tracks to Rock tracks. I can't decide whether to sway my body or flail my head around. If Ira Kaplan likes them, they just can't fail. "Sailin On" is amazing.

Quite easily the best hardcore album ever. Super fast, concise, adrenaline-fueled rage with a message. And a couple of great reggae tunes thrown in too. Don't listen to anything that fool below me says as he's full of failure. BB used to be a jazz-fusion group a'la Mahavishnu Orchestra and it shows with all the crazy start-stops and time-changes - these guys were by far the most musically talented hardcore band out there. Dr. Know is probably the best punk guitarist in history bar-none, H.R. was the most possessed, James Brown-on-crack manic frontman ever at the time, and the rhythm section smokes it and lights up another one. While some may put Cro-Mags or Minor Threat above this, just remember that the Brains were what those kids were trying to emulate, not the other way around. Nothing has touched it in the whole 26 years since its recording and that should say it all.

This is probably the most overrated punk/hardcore album of all time. The Reggae tracks are weak and heartless, and the hardcore tracks are very weak musically and the vocals are high pitched and don't fit the music. In addition to that the lyrics are terrible and focus on god in some songs (I love I Jah is probably the best example of that trash) And God does not belong in punk rock. Nor do rastas who can't play.
