Naming their third album The Holy Bible may well have been an ironic swipe at certain overly obsessive MSP fans, but one thing can't be denied - with this, they made an album genuinely worth worshipping. Sonically, it's post-punk with a rocket up its arse. Lyrically? For that, it's the best punk record ever, and by such a massive margin it's unbelievable. The Holy Bible's nihilistic, twisted characters spend 40 minutes tearing off boy's cocks, starving themselves to death, and revelling in their own fucked up little worlds. Crucially, the lyrics are always sympathetic to the protagonists, making this the most wierdly affecting experience ever set to roaring guitars, angular rhythms, and pulsating, strained, utterly convincing vocals. Make no mistake about it - even if Richey hadn't disappeared, The Holy Bible would still be one of the greatest artistic achievements of the modern era.

The spectre of Richey Edwards haunts this album, from the harrowing '4st 7lb' to the blacker-than-black 'Archives of Pain'. James Dean Bradfield's committed vocals and spellbinding guitar only add to the sonic maelstrom. Pure horror, but with strangely hummable tunes ('Die in the Summertime', 'Faster', 'Yes').

What do you get when you put a bunch of political glam-punks in a cheap, rundown studio with a bunch of Wire and Magazine records and a library of troubled authors? If you said The Holy Bible, you're part of a very exclusive club. The Holy Bible is pseudo-musician self-abusive anorexic junkie alcoholic genius Richey James Edwards' album, from start to finish. He neither composed nor played a single note on the album, but he wrote the album in every true sense. NME called it a "vile record". And they were right. It's twisted, aching, tortured and very very sick triumph of perversity. Overlook it at your peril.
