If anyone ever wants to define the extreme Finnish power metal sound, Follow the Reaper is it. Full of cold, atmospheric keyboards, musical virtuosity from all angles, and guitar/keyboard shredding that could turn Jesus into a pagan, Children of Bodom took their third album as the time to really refine their signature style. Musicianship and production are cleaner than ever with the melodies are as unique and memorable as ever. Alexi's voice sounds savage without crossing the line to completely indecipherable. From start to Finnish (yes, pun) the album makes you bang your head while inspiring legions of guitarists to grab their axes and shred until winter and heavy metal reign supreme.

Bodom's third album is where their signature style really shows. It's cold and evil sounding, as quite possibly bodom's best instrumentally. Just listen to Kissing the Shadows, six solos rage through the last minute and a half of the song, leaving the listener in awe. I feel that this is Laiho's best vocal performance as well, his screams are very black metal-ish on this release. Janne proves his skills with adding atmopshere to every song and soloing almost faster than the guitars. I enjoy HCDR a little more, but this is definately a classic that cannot be missed by any metal head.

dude, play that narly riff again. Okay, now make variations of that riff and make an album from it. Then memorize a bunch of Mozart and classical dudes and play that on your guitar for the solos. Don't worry, you can get the fancy keyboard guy to do most of the work. Now get a drummer and a bassist. Nothing to fancy, just two guys that will follow the guitars around and play fast beats. That's good. Now let the guitarist sing. Not sing, but make him scream, make him scream like a little boy trying to be a black metal voice while singing and growling, all of this at the same time. That's fucking essential, if we don't have that, we're just a power metal band, and no one wants that!
We'll call ourselves: Children of Bodom. FUDGING BROOTAL POWER METAL BAND.

The final album of Children of Bodom's first era sees little change from what came before. Everything sounds bigger and brighter (courtesy of a gorgeous Peter Tagtgren production), but unfortunately, this only serves to magnify the problems here. The songwriting is as shoddy as ever, with the abuse of the major key reaching epidemic proportions. While there are some strong moments, the lack of ebb and flow within the songs, coupled with some of the most insipid material the band has ever churned out (Hate Me, Bodom After Midnight); means that despite having the best overall sound of any of their albums to this point, this album misses the target by a similar margin to the band's first two efforts.

This album has been one of my all time favorites for a very long time and I think that it will keep that place for a even longer time. The keyboard and the lead guitar are working together in perfect symmetry and that is really the ultimate key why this album is so awesome.

Children of Bodom; the Finnish metal masters; deliver their third album - 'Follow the reaper (2000)' and It's one hell of a ride!
Bodom retain their style from their two previous albums; 'Lake bodom' and 'Hatebreeder' and if you're new to the band those things are: PACE, MELODY and SOLO's! features all Heavy metal bands should seek, and Bodom highlight these very well throughout.
From the eerie start of the opening track 'Follow the reaper' to the fresh sounding sweeping solo's of 'Kissing the shadows' it's evident that all members of the band have brought their a-game and this album secures Bodom's place as a serious force in Metal.
Particular member of the band who shine are Alexi Laiho (Lead guitar + Vocals) and Janne Wirman (keyboard). You might be thinking, if you're new to the band: 'How can a keyboard be used well in heavy metal?' well my answer to you my friend would be to listen to the second track from the album; 'Bodom after midnight', It's powerful chorus leading into a catchy bridge/riff accumilates into some of Janne's best work to date and Alexi follows up with a superb solo (One of many present on the album).
KEY TRACKS AND SHORT ANAYSIS:
'Bodom after midnight' - As mentioned; an epic chorus and melodically catchy solo make this a Bodom classic.
'Kissing the shadows' - Again, as mentioned, the ending duel between Guitar and keyboard is excellent and Alexi produces a masterful set of sweeps to end the album, something an amature guitarist like myself can only aspire to.
'Hate me' - The first ten seconds sum up the entire album, It's all about energy through melody. This is a real song you can sing to (something often disregarded in the area of death metal), screaming 'I dont give a *** if you hate me!' during the chorus sections.
FAILURES:
Okay, I've hyped this album alot so far in this review, and although the album is of 'classic' standard, it does have its limitations...
Firstly; and likely the main issue with all Bodom's albums; are the vocals: They may be catchy at times and keep the rhythm going, but they're not all too impressive and often you feel that there would be no substantial difference if they were removed. This is mostly evident during 'Verse sections' as most chorus sections seem to flow seemlessly ('Hate me' and 'bodom after midnight' particularly).
Another, harsh criticism, is the fact that, dispite the recipe being almost perfect, the albums does nothing to attract knew fans to the band, it's very much 'If you like em, you'll love this!' in oppose to a revolutionary step forward.
But if you can stomache the vocals, which certainly won't be to everyones taste, theres nothing stopping you from spending your money on this album.
In conclusion; The album has very strong strengths and very few things holding it back. It's fast pace, melody, heaviness and soothingness all formulate into one essential purchase.
I highly recommend this album, and award it 5/5.

I guess this is the only CD that it bucks me up this band. Some tracks are pretty good to listen 'em. Some awesome songs are that I'd recommend: Bodom after midnight, Northern comfort, Everytime I die and Kissing the shadows.

CoB are a great band, but this CD sucks. There is far to much corny keyboard runs in it. Corny and Boring. Buying this album was a mistake. This is a pop album. If you want to listen to CoB listen to Hatebreeder or Hate Crew Death Roll.

The other day I was browsing at cd's and I happened to come across this album, which I have been looking for for many months now. I think there is only one word to describe this album...AMAZING! It's a power metal album that is praised by many, myself being one of them. And wth good reaon. This album has some excellent guitar work, keyboard work and drum work. Power metal at it's best.

It appears that a rather large burden has fallen on my shoulders. Normally, Children of Bodom are, to experienced metalheads, simply food for the masses. Yeah, I say that a lot, but it's true a lot, so why don't you shove it? Berserk neo-classical shred and keyboard melodies don't make for a good album. Good songwriting does, something that Children of Bodom sorely lack. Jesus, if you want to hear somebody play the piano fast, why don't you take lessons with some illegal Russian immigrant who talks with an accent. It's all right in points and I think they're talented and all that bullshit, but really, this is subpar.

A classic on the rise. This masterpiece not only in the melodic death metal/ power metal genre, but the entire metal world! For a while in my life, i thought that metal was dead, Iron Maiden's X Factor, Judas Priests Jugulator, etc. I didn't think i would be able to listen to metal anymore. But then i heard the title track for this album on the radio. I was blown away! The sheer furiosity and speed on the guitars AND keyboards were amazing. The bass and the drums also set the pace very well. the lead guitar work and gruff vocals on this album haven't been heard since RUst in peace. Alexi is the new DAVE MUSTAINE!! I'm proud to be a fan, of this new metal band thats slowly becoming one of the greatest metal monsters in the world. Give 'em a listen and you decide for yourself if you want to follow the reaper!

I downloaded this after hearing "Are you dead yet" and how glad was I that I did?This is possibly the best metal I have ever heard. This album came so very very close to being a 5 but I felt a 4.5 was more adequate. It has a non-death metal fan hooked. A melodic masterpiece of metal.

Follow The Reaper, the 2001 album from Finland's Children Of Bodom. Dripping with a neoclassical influence, Black Metalish screams, top notch drumming, groovy bass, and atmospheric and at times technical keyboards. This album is definitely the highlight of their career.
