This is black metal in it's most sincere and carthaic form. A guy screaming over steroided blastbeats and tremolo picking recorded in a petrified forest with a tape recorder. Pure genius. It's not dramatically stylistically different then the other albums in the genre, but the pure and unrestrained emotion poured into every cymbal crash and gut-wrenching scream rips the listener apart. The best black metal album I own, by quite a long shot.

*crrrsshschchshchhssschhhhhhrrrrcsshsrrrchh*. Beneath an utter eyesore in terms of production there are actually some good riffs and the songwriting isn't all that bad at all either. I just think you'd have to be somewhat of a hipster in order to sincerely enjoy this. :3

Definitely interesting in terms of the concept explored. The lyrics are some of the best I've ever seen on any album. The one drawback to this album has to do with the music. Personally, I wish Ulver had included a bit more tonal changes like they did on their first album. This lack of change makes the album very difficult for most people not familiar with black metal to listen to.

Sincerely, this is one of the top black metal albums I've ever heard.
Structured around lycanthropy theme, here you have eight songs of pure, raw, dark, lethal
but still somehow beautiful black metal... I don't know how the guys did it, but this is one
of the greatest things I own.

all i am going to say is that whenever i have friends over and they think that what im listening to is bizarre or even sucks i just play any track off of this and they take it back. bergatt is light years better than this. the production just sucks a huge (well you know), and i'm not even going into how grating this album is on a decent set of headphones.

Let me get this out of the way before I actually focus on the album: I am not a black metal fan in any way shape or form. I bought this album for two reasons: 1) I was curious what the epitome of Black Metal sounded like and 2) I liked the cover. Not very inspired reasons, really. Ulver, in the circles of music I follow, are much more highly regarded for Perdition City and those style albums than their Black Metal trilogy. But nevermind all of that, because this album is fantastic. I was completely blown away. The first time I heard it, I hated the production. The second time, it failed to bother me at all. I was able to feel the emotion, the energy, and the intelligence that characterize this music. Raw, primordial, and primitive, just like the werewolf around which the concept revolves. Perfect at what it does, in short. Black Metal isn't my style, but this album proves the exception to that rule. And about the concept. Ignore it. You probably don't speak Norwegian, and you can barely hear the vocals, anyway. Just listen to... no, just FEEL the music. It's an adrenaline rush. In all honesty, I expected to buy this album for the experience and brush it off with a two star rating. On the main website I write reviews for, where this album is included solely because it's by the same band as the one that released Perdition City, I will give it a two because it doesn't fit the style of that site. But here, I can safely give it four stars, because that's what it deserves.

After Getting both Bergtatt and Kveldssanger I figured I should adleast finish out the Black Metal trilogy of Ulver. So a couple days ago i downloaded Nattens Madrigal. And for me it is probubly the most raw black metal album I own. The Music is very enjoyable and there is an interesting concept behind it all. Aside from the horrid production quality this isnt half bad. Although I am still partial to the blend of soft and heavy instead of just the all out heavy that this album brings to the table.
