Amazing album. The epitome of all technical death metal

This probably deserves a 4 rating, but it just gets too lost in its own technicality most of the time. Vocals are those of the devil himself though!

More refined than their last, but with an increase in the amount of musical variation and experimentation. The combination of technical solos, speedy death metal and classical influence produces a rich album that's not quite like anything else out there.

Listening to Epitaph is the equivalent of being caught in the middle of a storm of knives where every moment your wondering where the next dagger will strike. And the fucked up thing is that you enjoy it. To elaborate further Necrophagist creates a furious blend of raw technicality and dissonant melodies. These melodies help make the album more varied and interesting and stops it from becoming one long glorious wankfest making this one of the masterpieces of modern technical Death Metal. Best songs: Stillborn One, Diminished to Be, and Seven.

Despite the impressive musicianship the songwriting remains one dimensional and sterile in my humble opinion. Nevertheless "Epitaph" was an influential work within the technical death metal scene of the mid-00's.

Technically this album is incredible, unfortunately for Necrophagist this falls on the side of technicality for its own
sake. I also must add
that that when "The Capulets and the Montagues" came up in "Only Ashes to Remain" I lol'd.

The technical work on this album is incredible. I found this album a lot more accessible than the first Necrophagist album, mainly due to the fact it had proper instruments, rather than drum and bass samples (don't quote me on that, but I do know there were samples). It just sounded as if the whole thing was written on Guitar Pro or something. That is why I like this album a lot more, I find it much more accessible. On the whole, a very good album. But I do agree with a comment for the review, the technical work may be amazing but in terms of song-writing Necrophagist still have a way to go.
