How can you not 5 this. The idol J-Pop somehow mixes with the various styles of metal present in this album from thrash to deathcore. Mixing J-Pop and metal has been done before, for evidence check your average moody seinen/shounen anime theme tunes, and of course, Maximum the Hormone. but never quite to this extent.

The three-piece dance/metal group is either more or less an acquired taste; some may grow to hate Babymetal, while others shall grow to enjoy the hilarity and musicianship of certain tracks on their first album. I find myself on the latter side, of course... and people, just stop stereotyping Japan as the weirdest country!

It's fun at times, and it riffs at times, but it is a novelty and quite cringe-worthy at times. It feels contrived and disjointed in every possible way.

Don't know why I'm honestly surprised by the divisiveness this project has drawn. I will say that once you get past the novelty and start paying attention to the music itself, the cracks become apparent. This is a band you need to watch accompanying videos for in order to fully enjoy. Thankfully, they have several music videos between this and Metal Resistance, so as long as you have access to YouTube, keep your indulgence in BABYMETAL limited to that and you'll have a much better time.

first half until akatsuki is quite fun, n akatsuki itself is great, but then its creators forget theyre supposed to be making a metal album and just go full anime j pop. would also be a lot better if they got an actual singer instead of some teen dreams with avg vocals

In a way, this sounds like a real bad idea: Japanese idols singing their poppy litanies backed by a heavy metal band, and at times some trance synths make their apparition; now this sounds like a pedant critic's worst nightmare. Truth is, it shouldn't work, but it does: some riffs can be categorized as "hard as feck", some of the poppiest choruses successfully bring a mindless vibe, and the trance parts, if not representing musical finesse, are fun enough. Sure, the fabricated aspect of this kind of music is evident from the get-go, but the record shines by how pure fun it is. It's even more impressive given how obnoxious the whole lot could be.

Fucking hell this hurt. What hurt the most? The potential of the backing band. Their playing is insane, and clearly they could make amazing music. Yet they for some reason do this trash. When Line came on I actually wanted to die.

This is such an enjoyable album to listen to. The vocal work is astonishing and catchy. With great guitar riffs that leaves you wanting to bang your head until it explodes but you also want to dance around to the k-pop aspect of it. so you end up dancing around headbanging.

I'd give this a few points just for the fact that it's so hard to be indifferent about this album. The contrast between the full-on speed metal of the backing band and ebullient J-Pop of the 3 young vocalists is amusing for at least a short while. Takayoshi Ohmura is shredding his head off in the background. This is one of those albums you should hear at least once just so you can have an opinion about it. Whether you think this is actually GOOD music almost seems to be beside the point. There's no other band quite like them (yet).

It's pretty gimmicky but it works, as I find it an excellent fusion of j-pop and metal. I can see how people can dislike, it is truly a love-it-or-hate-it album.

I have to agree with the reviewer discovolante. This album is great. A solid 4.o. There are
at least 4 great songs on here (Mitsigune, Gimme chocolate and some others whose names are a
mystery to me because they are in Japanese), but it's all good stuff. The musicianship is
awesome and the overall sound is incredibly refreshing. The architect of this music has
found a space between radio friendly shit-pop and INSANELY AWESOME BRUTAL METAL >:D and
created something unique. Great stuff.
