4.5 superb | ProtestTheLegacy | March 25th 14 | All the jazzy ambient goodness from the first album with the heaviness of the second. Nolly kills it on the bass, and Bulb's production went over well. Tight, clean, sharp record with a vision.

3.2 good | Trey STAFF | March 26th 14 | Instrumental rock/metal is a very hit-or-miss thing. What works for someone will totally bore another. Unfortunately, this album fades into the background about as often as it actually catches my attention. Fluid, instrumental prog that is mostly pretty mellow (but energetic at the same time... weird).

3.5 great | MO | March 17th 14 | While still utilizing the strongest aspects which made and continue to make AAL such a force in the metal world they have managed to scale back the songs and make them breathe much more fluidly on this release. A very solid album, but sometimes gets lost up it's own butt.

5.0 classic | ZachDrums428 | November 22nd 14 | This has definitely been my favorite album of the year. Ever since the first listen I continue to be blown away by the musicianship on this album. The amazing amount of changes and the preciseness of everyone's playing is just incredible. It really shows how technically capable and how true of musicians these guys are. Although it is mainly a progressive metal band you can here all the different influences that have found their way into the album with clear signs of Jazz and Flamenco influence in a lot of Tosin Abasi's playing. Matt Garstka is obviously an incredibly gifted, diverse, and creative drummer, you can hear his influences such as gospel, latin, funk, metal, etc. But it isn't just the technical capabilities and diverse influences that make this album for me. It is also how well Javier, Tosin, and Matt converse with each other through their instruments which adds to the greatness of this album as it is hard to create such emotion with such technical music but because of their amazing abilities to listen to each other they found a way to do it. rI'm a huge fan of this album and can't wait to see them live and can't wait for another album from them.

4.5 superb | kyjelly | September 29th 14 | Such a good balance between creative, technical, and complex. The album is a journey, and breathes better than Michael Phelps. Basically, I could live on an island with endless weed and this one album, and I'd be content.

5.0 classic | brollin | April 19th 14 | Bumped to 5. This album latches onto you and won't let go. The combination of Another Year and Physical Education is unreal. Tosin and co demonstrate their virtuosity at every turn, and I just can't get enough. The compositions here are 10x better than Weightless and on par with the s/t (which is saying a LOT). AAL does all of metal a service with this album. Show your friends "Another Year"! Do it!

4.5 superb | AnEpicDeath | April 16th 14 | You could call this a spectacular return to form after the disappointing "Weightless", but that would somewhat undersell this album. While the jazz has made a strong return, this isn't more of the same from their self-titled. The more rock-rooted drumming from "Weightless" returns, and the guitars draw inspiration from much broader ranges of funk, latin, and jazz, bearing more than a tinge of Javier Reyes solo project "Mestis". The overall result is an album much more loyal to their debut and yet fresh and unique in their discography - and likely their best release to date.

5.0 classic | troyofyort | June 27th 23 | Animals As Leaders corrects course after the slight detour in quality of Weightless and releases an album that continues to masterfully blend the atmospheric jazz inspired lush chords with the thumpin' slap mastery band is famous for. Big recs to Another Year, Tooth and Claw, and Para Mexer.

0.0 | Blud Vidal | July 6th 20 | AAL's return to form after a disappointing second outing, The Joy of Motion has some of the highest of highs skyrocketing into the progressive metal pantheon (Tooth and Claw and Woven Web, to name names). While there are some less memorable stretches, this is an album of extremely complex yet subtly shifting tones, impeccable musicianship, and a generally lush and friendly tone. AAL cohere on this album and write music that emphasizes the supporting cast's strengths while accentuating Tosin's wizardry. If Weightless was a disappointment, their third effort is pure joy.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | July 3rd 20 | While Madness is acoustic and earthy, Joy offers a synth-led spatial (and I daresay djentier) flavour of AAL. Admittedly my conditions were a bit less good for this one, but I have to say I prefer the former aesthetic - which is hinted at in the intro to 9 - to the latter - which the track evolves into later on. Joy also feels perhaps a bit less drum-centric than its follow up, possibly because the drums are often covered by a wall of synths and heavily processed guitars. A lot of my fave parts on this are actually the simpler, rawer, more bare bones bits like dat riff on 10 (one of AAL's best), which is telling of why I prefer Madness to this one. Perhaps the most telltale sign is 11, in which I find the electronic bells and whistles and overproduction work against the otherworldy riffs instead of complementing them. Joy has some of AAL's fattest riffz and top tracks (1,3,5 after a minute, 6,7,10), and is well constructed eg with the chill 8 following the fat af 6 and 7, but I feel like it struggles more to create an atmosphere (like 4 gets me out of the zone a bit) and anyway I prefer the rawer atmosphere Madness crafts. Still a strong upper 4.2

4.6 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | January 17th 20 | Best wank ever. An instrumental record reminds us why we listen to music in the first place: we like it for what it is, not for what it represents. Without any concept to cling to (apart from the tracklist and the epic album cover), all we have left is the music. And what gorgeous music this is: a spacey jazzy djent wankfest with Latin music elements that manage to avoid obnoxiousness. This is the jazziest, and prettiest AAL has ever been, and the interludes are thus allowing the crunching polyrhythmic riffs to punch harder than ever. This interplay between heavier and lighter sections is the biggest win here and proves the band's uniqueness in a genre where pretentiousness is as common as incest in Northern France. To be a virtuoso is one thing, but this is useless if you can't bring emotion and beauty to the notes you're hitting. Instrumental prog metal done fucking right.

5.0 classic | ivanhowe2017 | November 28th 17 | In 2014, Washington D.C. prog metal trio Animals As Leaders put out their 3rd studio album “The Joy of Motion”, which is a huge improvement, as compared to their early works: “Animals As Leaders” and “Weightless”. On “The Joy of Motion”, the consistence, energetic performance and masterful musicianship found on their previous two studio works are still present on this piece of work. Bassist and guitarist Tosin Abasi, lead guitarist Javier Reyes and drummer Matt Gartska create an unique record, where the intrincate metal performances and music complex structures are king (e.g: Ka$cade, Lippincott, Air Chrysalis, Tooth and Claw, Crescent). On the other hand, you may hear echos of smooth jazz a la Jeff Golub combined with Nuno Bettencourt-ish masterful guitar textures on Another Year. Physical Education shows a mix of funky basslines combined with strong underlying keyboards amidst. Other tracks worth to listen are The Future That Awaitied Me, Para Mexer, The Woven Web, Mind=Spun and Nephele.
Track-by-track rating:
1. Ka$cade: 5/5
2. Lippincott: 5/5
3. Air Chrysalis: 5/5
4. Another Year: 5/5
5. Physical Education: 5/5
6. Tooth and Claw: 5/5

1.5 very poor | EasterInTheBatcave | May 10th 16 | So much great instrumental work, so few great songs. In fact, I wouldn't call any of the tracks on The Joy of Motion great. I love the production, the detail, and, as aforementioned, the performances, but the songwriting is just unsatisfying to me. The tracks seem to go in different directions without ever attributing to anything. As a result, the numerous fantastic sections are wasted in a hodgepodge of go nowhere riffage.

4.5 superb | Jared Floryan | December 9th 15 | It doesn't really matter whether you're a casual or diehard djentlemen, because as far as I'm concerned, The Joy of Motion is an ingenious, creative, and fun studio album altogether. Without missing much of a beat, progressive metal triad Animals As Leaders let both their technical and musical juices flow in a manner that is too satisfying to go unnoticed. Though the record is devoid of vocals, let it be known that a music release such as this that is purely instrumental can't be brushed off as boring IMO; I'll use Evan Brewer's Your Itinerary as an example, for while there are no voices to discern, it's still very enjoyable and adventurous without any kind of vocal performance to go off of. Back to the subject of Animal As Leaders' The Joy of Motion, it should be said once again: this is quite an entertaining LP - and one that possesses tireless replay value. Misha Mansoor and Adam "Nolly" Getgood's (of Periphery) contributions most certainly help.

4.5 superb | Alex C. | October 15th 15 | If you're in an instrumental band only and your first album was a genre-bending experience and you manage not only to not make a bad release but practically top it at your third disc then it means you're a genius, a damn genius.
