For those of you who don't know (shame on you), Crimson is a 40 minute song with a bucket load of progressive death metal riffs, many of them which are memorable and stick in your head after the song/album has played through. I bought this album after Purgatory Afterglow and I wasn't sure if this could top that. I loved PG but this... This blows it off the planet. This is when Dan Swan?s at his creative best (in my opinion), his vocals here are also the best he has ever done. This is one of the very very few vocalists that you can actually understand the growling vocals without the booklet, I kid you not! The guitarists all shine on the album, they all sound crisp and powerful and the music has a slightly fuzzy feel from the production which really fits the atmosphere. Epic, creative, unique and damn right powerful. There's a winning combination if ever I saw one.

I got into Edge of Sanity due to my love of melodic and/or progressive death metal. The band had been recommended to me on several occasions, so I decided to take the plunge. WOW! What a journey it was. Edge of Sanity's Crimson quickly became my favorite death metal album. The album is epic in the truest form of the word. I mean it's one 40 minute song for crying out loud...what isn't epic about that! The riffs are all memorable, the vocals (harsh and clean) are outstanding, the way everything is put together just flows so smoothly, it is literally impossible to not listen to the whole album in one sitting, which is impressive for me because usually I only like a few songs off any one album. It is rare indeed where I like an entire album from beginning to end.

Crimson is: Unique, epic, innovative, amazing and of course memorable. No other band in the metal scene can surpass Edge Of Sanity's crown jewel named Crimson. Crimson is both an album and a song, a 40 minute long song! This song is packed with heaviness, catchiness, aggressive and wonderful melodies. The vocal mix between the growls and clean vocals of the mastermind himself (Dan Swano) is more than great and the lyrics are mind-blowing as well. Everything you want from metal music can be found in Crimson. Words can't describe the greatness of this album.

In the 13 years since its release, Crimson has attained an almost legendary cult status among metalheads - and for the most part, it deserves it. Very few bands have attempted (or succeeded at) something like this; a single 40 minute song chronicling post-apocalyptic Earth, worldwide infertility, a false messiah, betrayal and revolution. But as good as the idea behind this progressive (melodic) death metal album is, its execution leaves a little to be desired. The band isn't able to keep Crimson interesting for all of its duration, and there are some stretches in the middle (about as long as a normal song) where little to nothing interesting happens. As amazing a musician as he is, Dan Swano's singing voice leaves something to be desired, but luckily he doesn't use it all that often.
So for the record: Is Crimson unique? Definitely. Impressive? No question. Amazing enough to call classic? Not really.

A landmark progressive death metal album, not only for the fact that it lasts for like forty minutes but also for the fact that this is an unrivalled collection of amazing riffs that never fail to kick you in the face, and some of the best progressive moments found in metal music. Seriously if you havent heard this and dont plan on doing so, kindly do all of society a favor and shoot yourself. thank you

I knew I heard Akerfeldt in there! But honestly, this is absolutely fantastic. With a song of such length you'd expect it to get stale after the first 15 minutes or so, but it doesn't. The riffs vary, but compliment each other well and the repeating one that pops its head in every so often as if to say "yup, still me!" is infectious. Definitely one of the first things I'd recommend for someone intending to get into DM, though that doesn't mean that the experienced can't thrash to it on a weekly basis. 4.4/5

The pinnacle of progressive death metal. Crimson is a 40 minute track full of the heaviest riffs you'll ever hear and is a long and winding journey that tells the story of a world where nobody is able to concieve children until one is finally born and brings hope to the world. I think knowing the story really makes this a greater experience. Dan Swano's growls are fantastic and he has a pretty damn good singing voice as well. I'd compare this to Opeth in some way in that you get the heavy moments mixed with clean melodic moments that sound more like 70's progressive rock. The production's a little murkier than Opeth but I think it's perfect for this album. Crimson is a breathtaking experience and not once does it ever drag which I can't say too many people could pull off with a 10 minute song, let alone a 40 minute one.
