Depeche Mode's most brilliantly dark hour. Contains a plethora of anthems to be played alone, at midnight including classics like 'A Question of Lust' and 'Stripped'. Its greatest charm comes in its ability to be both depressing yet uplifting. A Classic.

As with most DP albums, Gores ballads are sandwiched inbetween the foundational tracks and I always think they drag the album down. Black Celebration, Fly on the Windscreen, Stripped, Dressed in Black and New Dress are enough to warrant this atleast a 4.3 though.

A historically crucial album, as now DM finally display their classic, dark goth synthpop sound that we all know. Alas, imo, it is first showcased in an album where the sound is carrying it all and core songwriting is often not that great. 4,5,9,10 (which ends on a fadeout) particularly are either lame songs or boring ballads at their core, but are saved by all the synths, processed vocals, and beautiful prod that is thrown at them (particularly visible on 5). The opener is kinda cool but not a jam by any means, the transition into 2 is smooth altho weird, but 2-3 are less catchy although still not bad. 3 is violently 80s lol. 6 does better at being a song than its predecessors but gets annoying near the end, 7 is an okay synthy track and 8 is quite cute. 11 has a bit more of a beat and some good ideas but is ultimately not great and kinda concludes into nothing. Sadly the deluxe/bonus tracks are a better album than the album. Skipping the lives, 15 is a famous bop, 16 is mostly annoying but has some fun bits, 18 is a version of 2 with a prod i like much better as it emphasises the instruments more clearly, 19 is ok and 20 sounds a bit ridiculous today, then 21 and 22 are weird and cool tracks that arent maybe much to jam in and of themselves but that work super well at contrasting with the rest of this and would have been great on the actual LP. Maturation in just about every department is what led Depeche Mode to pen Some Great Reward, but as for that dark, melancholic synthpop sound that most casual listeners know, it all began on Black Celebration. Even from the title-track/opener, you can tell this a band going further down the rabbit hole in the exploration of darker sounds and themes. "A Question Of Lust" and "A Question Of Time" see the band firing on all cylinders, with a considerably veiled and frustrated feel complementing an uptempo and, of course, very catchy song. These were the first true breakthroughs the band had with this sound, and it carries over perfectly to the closing tandem of "Dressed In Black" and "New Dress", the latter of which deals with the juxtaposition of such trivial things as a stars' fashion choices and the deaths of children on daily news television channels and newspapers. It's not quite an all-around fantastic success, but this album was absolutely vital in shaping Depeche Mode's sound for the years to come.
