First Utterance isn't the only forgotten album to be uncovered by a major band as a key influence and brought to a whole new audience, but it may just be the best. Opeth are the band in question, of course, with both My Arms, Your Hearse and "The Baying of the Hounds" being references to songs here, and while this isn't a prog rock/death metal epic by any means, it's easy to see what Opeth took from here. The atmosphere is creepy as hell throughout, with the band putting folk music through a mangle that makes it sound like The Wicker Man's soundtrack amped up to 11. There's songs about rape, songs about murder, songs about pagan rituals, and it's all absolutely outstanding. An incredible album by any measure.

I feel like a group of druids just fed me a lethal amount of ayahuasca and are now dancing around me in wooden masks and performing a pagan ritual concert very trippy I love it though. I think it handles the darker elements of its subject matter (murder, rape etc) more artfully than albums that have similar themes (Soundtracks for the Blind, In Absentia etc) because it just feels authentic to such a graphic experience

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't appreciate or even found the album interesting. But I'd also be lying if I said that it made any sort of emotional connection with me.

What I don't like about freak records is that they often tend to be freaky all along, which I find tiresome on the long run. This album never does it though, quite the opposite, it always takes its time to take a running start, and when it blasts, it blasts hard, but it never wears out its welcome. Match this with an exquisitly British instrumentation, and you got yourself the ultimate psych folk record. I rate this 4.5, but it's probably a bit more. As I side note, I happen to be among the few people who discovered Opeth through this band, rather than the other way around.

Genre-hopping, experimental, trippy and genuinely scary. The combination of folk/prog/psych with
crazy lyrics create a schizophrenic and dreamlike atmosphere.
