The Beastie Boys most blatant funk/hip-hop influenced album. Absolutely jam-packed with wah pedal guitar fills, clangy harmonics and rough distortion. the rhymes are phenomenal, especially in tracks such as 'Shadrach' and 'Egg Man'. An incredibly solid album with originality and style to match.

Interviewer: Nathanael Hornblower, you've been working with the Beasties for the last three years. What can you tell us about their new record, "Paul's Boutique"? Nathanael Hornblower: Vell, I can tell you that it has been a remarkable experience. Ze boys have brought a whole new skill set to zis record. I have verked vith many artists, and none have impressed me like ze Beastie Boys have. Interviewer: Can you elaborate? Nathanael Hornblower: Zey are fragmented, allusive, aggressive, and inspired. Zey dredge all of musical history for samples (zey bite from John Williams, ze Beatles, and Idris Muhammad, for Gott's sake!), namedrop scientists, writers (after all, zey got more rhymes zan JDs got Salingers), and buy drinks from Orange Julius. Zis is a postmodern crisis of consciousness, a dick-measuring contest von by pop-culture knowledge, a rap battle fought vith a TV Guide in one hand and a syllabus in ze other. Fuck concepts, fuck tradition, zis is innovation. Interviewer: Well...um...we're certainly looking forward to it. Nathanael Hornblower: Yes, ve are looking forward to the release. I hope all ze Swiss girls come to ze party.

An album from a different time. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome... just... the time difference between when this was made, and the time of life where this would be most influential (not to mention the supreme cultural change during the time) is just too large of a gap to be really enjoyable. Good luck to other listeners though... 3.6/5

My mother's contribution to my insanity. She's probably the biggest and whitest Beastie Boy fan you'll meet. Anyways, I always throw this album on when I'm feeling down and need a pick-me-up. It's probably the funniest hip-hip album I've ever heard.

Perhaps hip hop's crowning achievement, though Eminem and Biggie Smalls would perfect technique and storytelling, no rap release was as bold or as influential as this one. Flawless craftsmanship from start to finish and stuffed with all the gags and hilarious commentary you could ever ask for.

Not a lot to say that's not already been said, but I consider this to be the crowning achievement of the many-faceted genre that is hip-hop. Nobody before, or after, matched it, and nobody ever will. And the great thing is, even the Beasties didn't try to replicate it, they went off in a totally different direction after PB dropped to make Check Your Head. This is an album that exists in a different plane to the rest of hip-hop, and it was made by three white Jewish kids from New York. High Plains Drifter is probably my favourite hip-hop song ever, certainly top three. Hip-hop is a genre that lends itself especially to albums, however, not singles; the cohesive nature of this album put it echelons above the rest, you can tell what they were trying to do, and it's a proper album instead of an arbitrary collection of songs. If you've never heard this, you'll get to experience something which, sadly, I never will again, which is hearing this album for the first time, with no idea what to expect.
