As if being a part of the band that made Kind Of Blue wasn't enough, John Coltrane went on to be the nearest thing to Miles himself as far as jazz celebrities go, thanks in part to his debut, Giant Steps, recorded at the same time as Kind Of Blue. Of course, I could bore you by explaining how it served as a blueprint for the use of tetrachords in a jazz (or any) format, began to move jazz towards a solo-focused aesthetic, and demonstrated the unbelievable imporvisational skills of this band. Or, you could just listen to the title track or "Countdown" and see for yourself, while marvelling at how enjoyable Coltrane made the whole process. Center stage, though, goes to one of the most beautiful ballads of all time - the wonderful "Naima". The critical nod almost always goes to A Love Supreme, but this has always been my favourite.

Trane takes some modal notes from Davis and fuses them into his harmonics-full approach. It makes for a banging record full of those Coltrane changes that hop from one tone to the other, yet it also retains the melodic ink he always showcased. Constantly banging.

A spectacular record seeing Coltrane take a (giant) step towards more sophisticated jazz. Putting on a true masterclass of a sax performance over his bandmates' progressions it does not get better proficiency-wise. However, the compositions lack some diversity, which makes the album falter slightly towards the end.

I don't know if it is the spotify version (maybe) or the fact that I listened on headphones
(probably) but my experience was a bit tainted by the mix and especially the panning.
Having the sax which is the only treble-heavy, "aggressive" sound only on one side kinda
hurts the ear, to a point where I enjoyed sections without sax more because of it. At
least the bass is very nice and audible - but again wholly on one side which is a bit odd.
Still this is great Coltrane material, especially the last two thirds. 1 is dancy and fast
and 2 is nice and swingy , but 3 was a bit of a letdown and again the mix hurt it all. Then
comes 4, perhaps my fav dig here, alternating the simple swing and danciness with a bit
more harmonic spice here and there. The piano solo is love too. 5 continues this semi dark
semi jolly vibe and is a dig too. 6 is lazy and sadder with a very nice vibe, then in what
I found an intelligent conclusion 7 contrasts this with the danciest, catchiest track yet
with super fun melodies. I need to rejam this in a different way. 4.1 Edit: mono mix is way
better, but I was gentle with the stereo mix too. 4.15

clicked the wrong one by accident. this album is cool shit. im not big onto jazz, but i listen to coltrane a lot. hes amazing. my favorite tune by him is Mr. PC. if you havent heard it check it out

one of my favorite jazz albums of all time. Coltrane puts forth one of his best efforts of his entire career, and is a good middle point between his more traditional earlier works and his later more avant garde stuff like 'ascension'
