This is just a short opinion, not a full fleged review. Personally, I think Tom Waits is among the, if not the, best songwriters alive today. I rank his lyrical prowess with the likes of Dylan, LennonMcCartney, and Magnum. My first draw to Waits was his offkilter experimental tracks, the ones outlined in the Bastards disc, but eventually I grew to emensly appreciate his crushing ballads. His voice like a steam roller over the haunting chords and the tragic Noir characters that are etched into the pavement of a back alley of every city in America, these tracks stab you in the chest with a corkscrew, yank your heart out and shove it back in older than it ever should be. These are murder, heartbreak, loss, confusion, and a little drop of humor filtered through long forgotten romantacism and dripped into twenty tracks of mud coffee surved by a one legged beauty with an eyepatch and a tattooed tear. Still, this collection is not perfect and from an all encompasing perspective, like every record ever made, it is far from flawless. But its is and its pretty damn impressive. *For anyone intrested, check out Alice, Rain Dogs, or any of his other records. And for those really adventurous, I personally find Wait's tragically manically obtuse passion reflected in the works of the amazing Canadian act Frog Eyes, so try to find their record The Golden River. I can't spell.

Never has another album come close to equalling the compelling melancholic atmosphere Waits achieves on this masterwork, specifically the Bawlers disc, which is worth it all just by itself.

Split into three discs; Brawlers (gritty blues), Bawlers (ballads) and Bastards (experimental tracks), Orphans represents some of the very best work of Tom Waits' career. Orphans combines Waits' cigarette-stained voice, his brilliant and astoundingly delightful songwriting and the diversity that has defined his career over the years. Somehow managing to be an entirely consistent release over the course of 56 tracks, Orphans cements Tom Waits' status as one of the greatest songwriters and creative artists of all time.

Never hearing more than one or two songs by him, Orphans and its vast scope introduced me to pretty much every aspect I could imagine about Mr. Waits. While Bastards may be the best disc, none of the three are below fantastic, and there isn?t a bad song of note on this sprawling album, while there are innumerable gems.
