While this band's first record was muddy sounding brutal death/grindcore combo that displayed flashes of brilliance with it's technical prowess, crushing brutality and anguished vocals, Hellbound is a more tame release. A cut above the majority of deathcore bands, FFAA frequently display that they can play their instruments extremely well, despite never offering anything spectacular. The breakdowns here are amongst the genre's best, as are the vocals which are on par with those of Thy Art Is Murder's CJ McMahon, and the album remains extremely consistent throughout, spicing things up on numerous occasions thanks to a couple of brilliant guest vocals spots from Nate Robedello (Xibalba), Vincent Bennett (The Acacia Strain) and the aforementioned McMahon. Indeed, the similarities between McMahon's band and this one are strikingly similar, right down to the production which is a massive improvement on the previous record. Ultimately, this is a better album than Hate largely because of the more diverse song structures (including a couple of slower numbers and, in similar fashion to the last album, a soothing outro).

why death metal? and why now? - the jobforacowboy effect. aside from this treason to oldschool fans, Hellbound is a pretty solid release and does nicely in the newly set genre borders.

In the past, nothing about this band caught my attention whatsoever. I found it generic and uninteresting. However this album is a stellar release. Not only to they explore some new territory, but they bring a consistent feel to the album and it holds a certain "realness" that is hard to describe. The guitar work is outstanding as well as the drumming and the vocals. Even the guest vocals on the album are great.
