The Beastie Boys are really my first introduction to Hip-Hop. They are very fun and distribute parts perfectly to each member. The three things that I look for in a hip-hop album are lyrics, rhythm and beat. These guys do that flawlessly. One thing that I do dissaprove of is Girls. It is supposed to be funny and it doesn't fit any of the quotas that I mentioned before. Also, Ad Rock is in it the whole time. He is good but his voice is to whinney and annoying. But this album is very enjoyable.

Okay so the beats are really basic, the songs are really simple and the lyrics are usually stupid. But fuck it, this is a helluvalot of fun and extremely catchy. Besides, I love me some genre-bending shit.

Sounds hopelessly dated for the most part, and I'm pretty sure everyone is really, really sick of about half the songs on this album - particularly tracks 7 and 8 - but who's kidding here? That's part of the charm, this album is legendary. The Beastie Boys' hilarious persona's (actual personalities?) and rapping are what really makes this album good, but the abundance of obvious samples, old school beats, and even a Kerry King guest appearance help make this album great. Far from pretentious, good party music with depth.

To start things off, OS Hip-Hop has been by far the hardest genre for me to get into and I'm still struggling on this album. However, in spite of this; "Licensed to Ill" was a pretty enjoyable listen. The first 5 or so tracks were a bit lacking, but as soon as 'Fight for your Right' hit the album as a whole got a lot better. Tighter rhymes, better grooves, and overall a much more cohesive 2nd half. 3.6/5

Uneven, cheesy, and too much yelling. The rhymes are simplistic and boring, and the beat for 'Girls' is one of the worst hip-hop beats I've ever heard.

This album is a classic because of one thing: the Roland TR-808. The beats are all so simple and so catchy, and the backwards drums on "Paul Revere" are awesome.
