He sucks unbelievable amounts of ass now (his retirement isn't a second too soon), but just 5 years ago, Eminem WAS pop music. It really was that simple. He dominated the industry. You could easily claim his direct attacks on N*Sync are the very reason for Justin Timberlake's sudden 180 turn of style; without him there'd have been no mainstream success for 50 Cent, or even Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, and Dre's "2001" wouldn't have reached such a huge audience. Happily, the first world-changing record of the 20th century just happened to be a life-changing one, too. I owe the course of my life, post-2000, to this record, and in that whole time, I've never got tired of it. "The Way I Am" still thrills; "Stan" still touches; "Kim" still terrifies. It's funny, scary, ugly, dirty, punchy, powerful, and, by hook or by crook, genuinely provocative and moving. In the year 3000, they'll probably still point to this as a masterpiece.

As of right now, this is my favorite album of all time. Dr. Dre's beats range from party bangers (I'm Back) to eerie sonic landscapes (Remember Me?). Eminem's lets loose his depraved and terrifying rage throughout, creating some of the most stirring and thought provoking tracks ever created. Kim and Stan in particular push the boundaries of music, widening the public perception and blurring the line between music and reality.

Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" is not just a good rap album, it is the pinnacle of rap, and a figurehead for music in general. This album is not a conventional rap album. Unlike most rappers, eminem knows he has faults, and he aims to point them out. Most rappers rap about only there success and their ability to "make-bank" and always get laid. There is none of that in the Marshall Mathers LP. Eminem scares you, he makes you laugh, and he makes you cry. In the Marshall Mathers LP, emotions are felt in 5 minute raps that couldn't be felt in a 30 minute epic.

On "If I Had", from the Slim Shady LP, Eminem began the song with the phrase "Life, by Marshall Mathers". Unfortunately, that record proved to be more about his maniacal alter-ego, Slim Shady, as the title would suggest. This record, however, is truly Marshall Mathers- an essay on hate, love, confrontation, family, the media and the hypocritical way of things in the modern world. This is truly "Life, by Marshall Mathers".
Call it disgusting, as "Zoe" did on the Slim Shady LP. Call it misogynistic, as many amongst the pop music community and mainstream media chose to do. Honestly, call it whatever the hell you like- just don't try to pass this off as anything short of a milestone in popular music.

The second CD I ever bought and still one of my all time favorites. The third CD I bought was The Slim Shady LP, in which I played "Role Model" in front of my Mormon mother. She then proceeded to eject it, and snapped it in half. I wasn't that mad though, I could still listen to Amityville and Kill You for my fill of cuss words.

Well what can I say about this album that hasn't all been said before? Revolutionary, emotional, aggressive, check check and check. This album basically changed everything I thought I knew about popular music, and without wanting to sound ignorant or racist in any way, probably introduced the majority of white suburban kids to rap music. Without a doubt this is lyrically a masterpiece, with Marshall on top form from the off. The tracks are startlingly diverse, most focusing on human emotions such as anger, fear, insecurity etc, but others just being plain stupid for stupidities sake. Lead single "Real Slim Shady" demonstrates this second point brilliantly, with witth intelligable lyrics intended to offend as many people as possible within the four minute forty four seconds of play time. Other album standouts include the brutally graphic, yet gripping "Kim" and "The way I am" a hauntingly accurate observation on the modern worlds fame scene. All in all, this album is fantastic, and even now, when in the mood, I will put this on and go through the emotional roller coaster that is "The Marshall Mathers LP", loving every second.

I don't see how this is a classic. It's very good, but it doesn't have the highlight power of Slim Shady LP, and along with a bunch of very crappy beats a la Dre, should've been a failure. Eminem's rapping pulled this one out of the dumps, but in every sense, Slim Shady LP is better. "Kim" and "Stan" are two of the best songs of his career, but ultimately that's mostly what's memorable from here.

Lets ignore the immense numbers this album has produced to look at the actual music. Eminem delivers at his near peak, moving this album to classic status. He raises the bar for lyrical ability by rhyming phonetically at rapid rates. The album would have been a 5 if it wasn't for a few misplaced tracks like "Under the Influence" which should have been saved for Devil's Night (by D12). Many consider this to be Shady's strongest album and it is in totality. But song for song? Eminem has spit far more aggressive and complicated verses than what is heard on the MMLP.
