| 5.0 classic | BallsToTheWall | September 4th 13 | Sometimes, its hard to approach your favorite albums with anything short of a complete fan boy attitude. Its hard to describe them with anything but complete praise, and idolization. It is also easy to get overly pretentious when you try to recommend, so when I say Hubardo is the sound of Fall, the sound of raindrops cascading down a mountainside. Its the sound of emotion, love, hate and betrayal all in one. Its the sound of birth, death and life, crashing together and ending all too soon. Hubardo is the sound of triumph and failure, the sound of gain and loss, the sound of poetry being muttered quietly in case the emotion flutters away. Its the sound of everything you take for granted, the music that graces your ears without you even knowing, its an emotional masterpiece that will never be recreated ever again, Hubardo is utter bliss, a masterpiece that doesn’t need to be loved by everyone, as those who do will find more than enough to last a lifetime, know that I say it as truthfully as anything I’ve ever said about an album before, and for me; Hubardo is all of this and more.

| 5.0 classic | andersvisa | August 31st 13 | Kayo Dot's general reception....2003- Choirs of the Eye: HOLY CRAP 2006- Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue: Cool, needs more metal a trippy dark affair 2008- Blue Lambency Downwards: Is this frank zappa? 2009- Maudlin of the Well- Part the second: Fuckin groovy 2010- Coyote: They had a new album? 2012- Gamma Knife: Growls are back 2013- Hubardo: INSTA AOTY HOLY CRAP ITS HEAVY AND LONG AND DARK But in all seriousness, Toby is the man. I've loved all his work and this new album is an instant classic even after one listen through. Given the history of the band and a return to their heavier roots and the length and and the concept, the musicianship everything about this album is gold. Everyone needs to go back and listen to Blue Lambency, Coyote and Gamma Knife if you never did. All very amazing works which led up to this beast.

| 4.3 superb | fluid in its most purist form. always drenched in an undeniable regal divinity. | August 9th 13 | Although the seminal Kayo Dot album has always been considered to be Choirs of the Eye, Hubardo has proved itself to be a challenger. Hugely diverse and utterly gripping from start to finish, it is almost a catalogue of the band's career, but - as goes without saying - experiments with new styles to great effect (see: Zlida Caosgi). I would have to say that it is possibly more immediate than anything else in their discography, as long as it is listened to with close attention - this is clearly an album that is meant to be appreciated, rather than just a powerful artistic statement (which it is as well, but it isn't as borderline incomprehensible as, say, Coyote). From the heaviest of the heavy (Floodgate) to the dreamiest song since Amaranth the Peddlar (The Second Operation) to everything in between (Thief), Hubardo is solid gold. Probable album of the year.

within the realms of their own lives are praising this album as the second coming of
Christ.
If an album was the return of Christ it'd be a blackgaze album anyway.

| 0.0 | zxlkho | September 4th 13 | here you go Aids, The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind?s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one?s self, known as ?transcendence?, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed.

| 5.0 classic | NoremakSeggob | September 1st 13 | I feel like this album in retrospect to the band's previous releases is like a well
constructed Kayo Dot song; BLD, Coyote, and Gamma Knife being the long minimalistic build-
up, slowly crescendoing to the all out emotional and intense climax that is Hubardo. I see
what you did there, Toby. Your entire discography IS The Manifold Curiosity.

| 5.0 classic | DeputyExorcist | September 1st 13 | Yeah, so normally I maintain that no album made in the last 30 years holds a candle to anything done in the 60's and 70's, at least prog wise. This is an exception, and is perhaps one of the best albums I have ever heard. This blows the rest of their catalogue out of the water, including Choirs of the Eye(which I also consider a classic), and anything in maudlin as well.

| 4.0 excellent | Bedex | May 2nd 19 | Glorious album by a glorious band. Despite its 90+ minutes runtime it is absolutely never boring, constantly switching both genres - from experimental metal to jazz, prog rock, post-rock/ambient - and instrumentation - guitar based, brass, keys, you name it. A crazy idea brilliantly executed. No bad tracks, but Thief, Zilda Caosgi, The First Matter, The Second Operation, Passing the River and the albumrcloser are highlights for me. 4.2

| 4.3 superb | Erwann S. EMERITUS | April 12th 19 | The quintessential Kayo Dot album. I don't really get what "The Black Stone" is doing on this album, but hey it's still incredibly incredible. Fusing black metal/jazz/electronic/classical/prog rock, it's the perfect example of modern music as it creates new sounds by incorporating multiple influences. Shame no track here attains "The Mortality of Doves"' levels of jizzness, but here is nonetheless one of the best musical works of the 2010s.

| 3.5 great | EasterInTheBatcave | July 15th 16 | Hubardo is a 2-hour jazz-metal extravaganza, and Kayo Dot's best record since Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue. Dense, intricate arrangements, perfectly tuned production, and remarkable performances combine for an exhausting, but accomplished, album. Admittedly, the album's concept is somewhat lost amidst the instrumental chaos, but the lyrics are fantastic, replete with vivid imagery and unique wordplay. It's a lot to handle in one sitting, but Hubardo is excellent.

| 0.0 | Lambda | December 7th 13 | 2013 AOTY -- A mammoth, sprawling, incredibly interesting release. This double disc, 100-minute album does not feel that long in the slightest thanks to the unpredictability and uniqueness of its songs. No two sound the same. However, while they are mostly stellar, there is a relative dud track ("The Second Operation (Lunar Water)") and occasionally one will go on for too long. Also, the music doesn't always line up to the story being told- it's as though they are, at times, out of sync with each other. Despite these flaws though, no other album I heard this year struck me as strongly as Hubardo. It is an engaging, effective listen, and the best record of 2013. 4.6
