It has its flaws, but overall this is a very well put together piece. Sure, you may cringe at some of the lackluster falsetto, or the "syncopated" drum patterns played by someone that thinks syncopation only consists of saying fuck it to composing a competent rhythm section, but try to deny that sweet, sweet sax at 2:30 or the riffs of truth that carry from 3 minutes to the end.

I understand how someone can argue that this is good, but all I see is an extremely pretentious concept that anybody could have come up with. People will use the "rest is part of music, so a full composition of rests is music too" argument, but a lack of intentionally created sounds is not good unless it is meaningfully used relative to intentionally created sounds. This is not music.

As far as experimental music goes, I suppose this would be the pinnacle, given that it is an experiment conducted through music, or through what one would perceive to be music. A lot of thoughtful discussion has been generated as a result, and that's pretty cool, even if it is just varying degrees of silence and background noise. As such, it's completely arbitrary to rate something like this, so since 4'33" converts to 4.33 in decimal form, and 4.33 rounds up nicely to 4.5 within this rating system, a 4.5 looks as good a rating as any.

John Cage is a cunt. What kind of pretentious asshole shit is this? rIt's not like people are unfamiliar with silence, but oh no, "it's the sounds around you". If you're hearing it performed, then I'd imagine that the venue is made to be silent elsewhere.
