Why pay attention to Acidity's soundoff when you could be listening to a modern day classic? Panopticon is the gem of slow-burning sludge and post metal. The music on this album creates a near-suffocating atmosphere. The weaving and interlocking guitars and keyboard create a density that I have yet to hear something that can surpass. The "repetitiveness" (note the quotes) of each song is in fact just a slow, magnificent buildup leading to an orgasmic climax. The vocals are both harsh and melodic at the same time. The drumming is simple, but it suits the music well. The bass serves its purpose while throwing in a few driving lines here and there. "So Did We" is essentially the perfect post-anything song, revolving from bone-crushing sludge to thick, soaring ambient textures. This is truly a groundbreaking album in the realm of metal.

The sheer power, beauty, and majesty of this work of art put into stark contrast the blandness and mediocrity of the rest of the world, making me almost feel as though it ain't worth living in it. At the same time, every single massive buildup is so powerful that it makes me appreciate every single one of life's little miracles that I witness every day, and life itself. I swear to God (this music proves to me that He exists) that In Fiction changed my life. Thank you Isis for creating this album and introducing me to the genre as a whole, although nothing will ever top this.

The reason why this album is so groundbreaking isn't just because of the beautiful atmosphere, use of electronics, or even the flawless songwriting... If you listen to post metal, you'd definitely agree that NONE of these songs get boring. The repetition is not truly repetition because as the songs progress, subtle dynamics are added just to make the buildup that much better. To realize all of those subtleties and all of the flawless aspects aforementioned, is to realize the greatness of this band, and the perfection that is this album.

Panopticon is an album that hits me like no other. From the opening riff of 'So Did We,' to the closer 'Grinning Mouths,' this album holds a certain majesty I haven't experienced with any other album. It's by far the most unique feeling I've encountered, listening to this album, and it never fails to set me in silence and awe.

The expansive soundscape found on Panopticon is paralleled by none. This album ranges from soft, ambient passages to emotionally crushing climaxes. The expansive and intensifying buildups in between are incredible to hear. At first listen Panopticon appears to be a pretty repetitive album, but when paying closer attention there are all sorts of subtle changes going on with a nice range of dynamics. Each instrument works off one another, no single instrument really standing out a lot from the rest, and this works beautifully. Listening to Panopticon is like taking a journey through the human subconscious and discovering all sorts of intricacies that one was not aware of previously.

Panopticon is near-perfection. The changes in mood, ambiance, emotions, song structures and tones are so neatly executed it's insanely hard to ignore the extent of talent Isis has. The songs appear so simple yet so complex at the same time. The minimalistic atmosphere of it all actually pushes the listener to dwelve more into the beauty of Panopticon. Simply put, this is the magnum opus of post-metal.

Definitely a thought provoking listen. This album honestly took about a year of me listening to it on and off for it to click. The secret to this album is the atmospheres and the slight changes in the background, take Altered courses for example which on the surface is a simple drum beat with uninteresting guitar work, but if you delve beneath that you find an ever shifting atmosphere of beauty. Definitely one of the best tracks on an amazing album.

Post-Metal is a strange genre and Isis have mastered it as if it's blossom were in effect. Panopticon is the magnum-opus of epic proportions, and the landscaping effect of their music here is earthshaking.

Easily Isis' best album, this album is simply epic in every sense of the word. A real best of an album that feels gradiouse whether it be the harsh sludgy vocals, the beautiful quiet passages or the thundering guitar. While this album is quite good it certainly doesn't warrant itself a 4 for a couple of reasons. It doesn't break any barriers, theres no groundbreaking musical talent involved with it, It has a nice flow to it but there isn't much more depth than that really. It's a fairly good listen but I'd say it deserves more of a 3-3.5

Heard a lot about this band and finally decided to check it out. Took a while to grow on me but man! This is some awsome shit. The instrumentation is superb and the way the music weaves in and out from heavy to hypnotic moments is mesmerizing. Flawless music if given the chance to plant its seed in your puny human brain. The only downside I found was that the vocals lack any 'punch', which is understandable since the tone of the guitars are so heavy and due to all the different layers going on but still.. The vocals don't do anything noteworthy and will hopefully be improved to add more to the music in future releases. Can't wait to check the new album out!

Instead of relying on trivial, cheap climaxes requisite with shrieking and monolithic bass, Isis's music is carefully sculpted and layered & the climaxes feel like some otherworldly shifting of tectonic plates.

Isis have pretty much perfected their gentle style of post-metal on Panopticon - the heavy sections are crushing without being aggressive, the slower sections are well constructed, and the ambient parts (see: Altered Course) are meandering and deliciously lazy. This is outstanding stuff.

An album that can change your perspective of music, human emotion, scale, grandeur, your life even, must be held dear to oneself. That, in a cinch, is Panopticon for me. I could listen to this album for years on end and never tire of it. The songs roll, explode, plod, scream, and wail in the span of seconds and repeat the process all over again. It is a wonder that strings (of the vocal and guitar/bass variety) and drums, coupled with synthesizers, could make one feel this way. You have an album like that, surely. Can you really explain it either?

This album just keeps getting better and better for me. I'm totally taken aback every time I hear "So Did We," and I think 5 out of the 7 songs give me chills. This was the band that got me into post-rock/metal of any kind. I got to see Isis last night in Houston, and I'm going tonight to Baton Rouge to see them...can't wait. When they broke into "Backlit" I almost hit my head on the ceiling I jumped so high. I'd give this album a 5 rating, but Sputnik says that only 10% of my albums can be a 5...so i guess i gotta bump one out...or go rate some crappy ones.
