My name is Samuel J Krieg and in today’s mini-review I will discuss the Neurosis masterwork
Through Silver in Blood. According to extensive research by my esteemed fellow Neurosi, the
TSIB compact disc is the heaviest known object, with a mass of eighteen billion solar
masses, more than six times the value calculated for the previous largest object. The mass
was calculated by Dr. Herman Sears, who testified before the 250th meeting of the American
Astronomical Society that Isis’s Oceanic is by comparison a piffling 100 grams, worthy only
of our contempt and derision. Speaking before the committee, Mr. Sear’s assistant Brad
Hendricks stated that the record’s quasi-periodical eliteness occurs at three second
intervals and noted its "crushing heaviness and malevolent undertones". At this point the
members roared their approval and indulged in copious amounts of mead, served in goblets by
large breasted maidens of science.
Through Silver in Blood is an experience designed for the modern home auditorium. Dim
the lights, grip the sides of your plastic bucket seat and revel in the sodomizing riffs of
Neurosis. Of particular relevance to my interests are the sheer brute power of “Locust Star”
and torturous death march “Enclosure in Flames”, less a song than an agonizing trek through
a bleak musical landscape to an uncertain fate. Even in a year that saw the release of
movies like Independence Day, Twister and Jerry Maguire, Through Silver in Blood remains my
favorite entertainment experience of 1996, and fully deserves its legendary reputation.

While many bands can describe their music as "brutal" or "heavier than heavy", few have written such a truly massive and brutal record as Neurosis' Through Silver in Blood. With nine tracks clocking in at nearly 70 minutes, the album begins with the truly crushing title track which, while centering around only a few riffs, topples almost any other post-metal track for sheer titanic mightiness. The "single", Locust Star, contains one of the heaviest moments in Neurosis' discography and the longest song on the record, and my personal favorite, Purify, escapes from the brutality in its outro, featuring blaring bagpipes which create a sort of tense serenity. I have never before encountered a record so huge, so unflinchingly bleak, as Through Silver in Blood. While being unquestionably inaccessible to the casual listener, it will prove to be a truly unique and unforgettable musical experience for those who understand its brilliance.

The heaviness is here but the emotion and intensity are not - No one can deny the crushing power of Locust Star, but songs like Eye that should be gloriously devastating are merely blunt and dull. Neurosis's talent and unique sound are on display here, but they would move on to bigger and better things. Still damn good, though. Oh, and the opening track is punishing.

Absolutely astounding album. It was hugely influential and propelled Neurosis into godlike territory. Still remains the blueprint for the entire post-metal genre. This is the most "metal" album Neurosis ever made, as their experimentation continued on the following albums, making Neurosis even more unique and forward-thinking.

Very ahead of its time. A LOT of bands copied off of this album/band. You can hear it in Botch, every sludge band now, hell, even Tool might be have slightly influenced by them in their later material. These guys must have loved Brutal Truth or something because that is the only album that I know of to mix some noise/sludge/grindcore at that time. rHowever, the album just turns into a big mess. Nothing fits together it is seriously just noise. A handful of the parts are sweet, but it is nothing that I could ever sit down and intently listen to again. This would be a good album to space out to, but that's it.

The most primal sound of Neurosis as well as their most iconic. The is the album that perfected post-metal, the godfather of the genre, opening the door to a world of experimentation, refinement and growth. A classic in the least.

Such a hard album to get into, although after seeing live videos of Locust Star, I think it might be sinking in a little more. Definitely deserves repeated listens. I can tell that I'll love it eventually, just not yet.
