An emphatic return to form for The Ocean, who ditch the philosophical posturing and return rto what they're best at - creating massive soundscapes in a great conceptual framework.

This is potentially the greatest release I've heard from The Ocean. The abrasive throat- shredding vocals are backed with gorgeous, cinematic soundscapes that are more transportive than ever. The alien closer "Benthic:The Origin Of Our Wishes" is a fantastic example of the mixed abilities this band has, ranging from creating thick mystical fogs to conjuring demonic aliens in your bedroom.

Instrumentally proficient progressive metal. The album loses its way towards the end, and the vocals are, on occasion, underwhelming ("Mesopelagic: Into the Uncanny"), but this is atmospheric, well-orchestrated music that deserves to be heard by metal and non-metal fans alike.

When acting as a mere collection of songs, Pelagial is nothing short of bearing an overall excellent quality; but when viewed as the concept album that it truly is, it's practically a gargantuan squid fending off a morally ambiguous base underwater. Seeing how the track titles take their names from oceanic zones, metal outfit The Ocean start out relatively optimistic here only to become increasingly darker in atmosphere until there is no light to be seen, which is similar to how the surface is above pitch black isolation. The instrumentation paired up with the vocals are jaw-dropping and the production couldn't be any better this time around.

The Ocean is exploring the depths of the ocean - in an intoxicating whirl of water and emotions. In my opinion one of the best metal albums ever created. If you don't like the vocals check the instrumental version.

Great concept album that's enjoyable from start to finish. Mixes a lot of different genres from sludge to doom with progressive touches. They do a hell of a live performance for this album (especially the vocalist).

The last two albums really underwhelmed me and a lot of other people, but they seem to be back on the right track with this one. It doesn't quite hold me attention for extended periods, but there's a lot of material to get through.

As soon as I heard about the concept of this album, I wanted to hear it. I love the idea of the album getting progressively darker and more claustrophobic as it progresses, as if the listener is slowly sinking to the very bottom of the deepest part of all the oceans on earth. With this in mind I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed as there are a few songs (signals of anxiety & let them believe) that break up this "sinking feeling," at least for me. Don't get me wrong, they're good songs, they just break the flow. Even so, this is still a very good album with a fantastic concept.

Very cool concept, and an initially great execution which loses steam over time. That is this album?s biggest issue; staying power. The mammoth soundscape treading one through the depths of the ocean with pounding guitars, drums and bass joined by strings starts out great, but becomes stale.

Cool concept to delve into the deep ocean. At first the record is quite aggressive (shark attacks and shit like that), then, as the abysses are the like second darkest shit on this planet, the Abyssopelagic's tracks bring an both an ominous and a hopeful feeling: the cleans are cleaner, but the riffs are like snakes, ready to attacc as soon as you're not ready to fight.

Rating based off the instrumental version. It feels like they are still trying new things but it doesn't sound as inconsistent as their previous two albums. Every song feels like it fits and there was a clear destination for every track. Not sure if it will wear off on me but for nowra solid album.
