I was subjected to a beating by the harsh, hard-nosed monsters of a sickened morality held liable for Abandon All Life's creation. For a total of 17 minutes, I was throatfucked by the executioner's blade courtesy of Todd Jones, strong-armed into spinning around like a drunkard's unruly hairstyle due to Taylor Young's merciless drum work, and received a nasty elbow smash to the face thanks to Kurt Ballou's downright gritty production.

This may be due to better listening conditions, but for the most part this one felt better, faster, and more fun than their debut LP. I was going to rate it 4.0, but the last track brought that down a fair but. It changes styles, going into something slower and more metal-ish. While conceptually that can be a cool idea, here the result feels contrived and not that great, like the record trying to be what it isn't: a grand album where such genre switches bring welcome variety. This would have been better staying a short bit of Nails fun at your throat, imo. 3.8

Chaotic in the essence and conception. A pure and evil lesson of how you make a nearly perfect Powerviolence record. Nails will be for years the greatest name in Powerviolence recent history. Theis discography is fucking relentless, presenting us a great amount of pure rage tracks that gives us some of the most violent punchs on ours ears. Pure gold stuff right here.

A base of hardcore, grindcore and powerviolence gets a thick layer of sludgy metal slapped all over it. Abandon All Life is heavier and closer to the metal realm than Nails' debut Unsilent Death but still carries the anger, violence and energy that made the debut so good. Much of this is thanks to the work of Todd Jones on vocals and guitar, the man's passion shines through with relentless aggression. The vocals may be repetitive but this is all made up for by the 17 minute runtime; quality over quantity here. Nails also do very well by using longer, slower tracks in Wide Open Wound and Suum Cique in the middle and end of the album to give it a natural flow. These tracks break up a barrage of 1-minute machine gun tempo grind tracks with heavy, almost meditative, chugging downtempo destroyers. Nails isn't the most original outfit in the business but they are extremely consistent with what they do delivering some of the most aggressive heavy music and memorable riffs in the game.

Really kickass album, but all the songs are so short that it sometimes seems that they end just as they're getting to the best point. That really doesn't hinder the album though, just wish there would be a little bit more. The music that is here, though, is nearly flawless.

Nails have come to place their boot on the neck of the hardcore genre, tying in some truly ferocious chops along the way.

On their Sophomore release, the perfectly titled Abandon All Life, Nails release one of the most pissed off and abrasive albums of the year. Even though it is hardcore at the heart, Nails adds a healthy dose of death metal heaviness and grind fury to make it more interesting than any other Hardcore released this year. The grindier songs keeps the albums momentum moving at all times, while ripping off your face in the proscess (Tyrant, the title track) but where Nail's truly excels is when they slow it down to an Elephants marching pace(Wide Open Wound, Suum Cique). Your bones are crushed to a fine powder after these mammoth jams. Best songs: Gods Cold Hands, Wide Open Wound, Suum Cique
