Man they were really onto something special with their last album, but this one just falls completely flat in comparison. On its own, it's a pretty enjoyable album for what it is, but I really thought that Phoenix had to potential to really move forward and create another undeniable masterpiece. This is certainly not that masterpiece.
Energetic Synth to create a unique sound for the entirety of the LP, my only grape about this is the lyrics feel incomplete with thoughts on some tracks. As a follow through with their last album I have no major complains as this is a great direction for the band.
I'd probably give this a 4.2. It's essentially a sequel to "Wolfgang", and like most sequels it's not as good as the original. Luckily this is more "Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade" than it is "Jaws: The Revenge". Which is to say, while it isn't as good at "Wolfgang", it's still a worthy follow-up.
Does anyone else get an 80s synth vibe from this album? It's definitely an interesting sound, and it's an enjoyable album. I'm only listening through one long iTunes stream (sans separate tracks), but I haven't noticed any clear stand out singles. It doesn't mean this album is bad, far from it, but I didn't find myself clamouring to hear any songs again right away.
