Vampire Weekend shatters my (admittedly low) expectations with this album. It's not a collection of transparent pop songs this time around. The progression in their sound is admirable, and their sound has gone to a really nice, airy, upbeat place within the congested indie pop scene. Best surprise of 2013 yet.

It's kind of hard to pay attention to the rest of the album when you have a brilliant song like "Step" on track 2. Anyway, this is an excellent effort from Vampire Weekend.

'Unbelievers', and 'Diane Young' are the two stand-out rockers on the album, while 'Step' and 'Ya Hey' are slow, mellow songs with baroque touches and funky rhythms. Last two songs 'Hudson' and 'Young Lions' are slightly unfulfilling closers, but the pros far outweigh the cons.
