The Killers second album Sam's Town follows almost three years after their smash debut Hot Fuss, which was devoid of all subtlety but gave the first indication in living memory that Americans were capable of using synths responsibly.
Speaking of synthesiser abuse, Brandon Flowers credits Bruce Springsteen as his biggest influence in the writing of Sam's Town, muttering something that resembled "he made us all believe again." If Hot Fuss was a celebration of the the British contribution to the '80s (Morrissey, Duran Duran, New Order), Sam's Town turns the table on the Americans.
The lyrics may as well be taken from the Springsteen Guide To Meaningless Fucking Metaphors, while the music takes in everything from After The Golrush to Lou Reed and U2 (America can have Bono, we don't like him.) The defining factor that works for Sam's Town is that while Hot Fuss was inconsistent and, to an extent, disposable, on Sam's Town Flowers concentrates on strong, even songwriting. And the shoe fits.

I felt cheated by this album, having only heard a few songs before buying it, I thought I was in for a treat. But there are about four good songs on this album. The rest range from mediocre to bad.

A great album IMO, in fact probably (no matter how much I get flamed for it) my favourite of all time! All the tracks compliment each other from start to finish and I think it is a fantastic progression from hot fuss.

First of all, I'd like to say that I heard this album prior to hearing Hot Fuss so I am somewhat biased in my opinion. With that being said, I think this album gets a lot of undeserved flak for not being exactly like the first.
This album by itself is practically a masterpiece. It has some of the most haunting melodies of anything being put out these days; particularly "When You Were Young" and "Bling (Confession of a king)." These songs are not expendable and should be listened to more carefully. The songs on this album are very in depth and heartfelt, especially in comparison to Hot Fuss. I suppose thats just a matter of taste, but I like a song that can actually make me appreciate the world around me while I have my headphones in.
This album deserves much more credit than it is given in my honest opinion.

i'm tired of hearing "there are going to be only a few singles on this album". up until uncle johnny, every song is very solid. hits you on both sides unexpectedley. the 2nd half of this album was alot better than the last time around. "hot fuss" was a half remarkable album. the talent was there but it was just a foul ball. the killers connected with the listener better with pop songs like "bones" and meaningful ballads like "my list". i hate when people automatically tune out to slower killers songs. they may start out dull but they are def more than listenable. the bass was toned down in this album but they guitar more than makes up for it. i wish they would record with the guitar being the focal point rather than the good bass. this is going to be one of my favorites for a long time

The Killers are caught someplace in between the soaring synths of the 80's and Bruce Springsteen, this album just feels like they're trying way too hard and it gets by on sheer flair and bombast. The lyrics are cheesy, brimming with optimism, and they lay on that whole "We're American" thing a little too heavy. I may not like it as much as Hot Fuss, but the sheer enormity and flair that it has keeps me from completely disliking it.

Following up what was quite possibly the best debut album of 2004 was never going to be an easy feat. Still, Brandon Flowers and co. did a fucking good job with Sam's. It's an ambitous set of anthems and rockers, with the guitar dragged through the dirt right up to the front and centre, leaving the polished synth to the side for the most part. It's a gamble - Hot Fuss thrived on the buzzing electronic sounds - but if songs like "Confessions of a King", "Uncle Jonny" and the swelling epic of the title track are anything to go by, it was worth the risk. One of the more memorable cuts of 2006, it's difficult not to enjoy your stay in Sam's Town. Even if it's just for the day.

i got this album thinkin it'd be as good as their first, shit decision.
couldnt stand most the songs on this and the ones i did enjoy started gettin dull after a few listens. not many pros in this cd in my opinion

On first listen of this album I must say that I was very disappointed, especially when comparing it to hot fuss but now, after many more listens, I see that this is a far more complete and cohesive album than hot fuss, sure there are no catchy hits on here but that doesnt mean that sam's town is a bad album, if anything it means that all of the material here needs to be more consistent.
Summing up
Hot Fuss - great catchy pop songs, but second half of album drags considerably.
Sam's Town - the catchy numbers arent here but a strong and consistant album.
