Wow. At the Gates makes what might be the best melodic death metal album out there. It's slickly produced,
smartly played by all performers, and lyrically intense. These are all elements needed to create a great metal
album that are often sacrificed by other bands in an attempt to be fresh and new. Their Gothenberg sound is
strong with them and it fares them well. The homogenous nature of the music does not become tiring due to the
outright exciting way in which it is played. A near perfect album.

This is alright but alot of it is recycled and after a while, sounds very tiring. i love blinded by fear, slaughter of the soul and suicide nation though.

The guitarists are very good, as is the rhythm section, but the vocals are terribly annoying and most, if not all of the songs are way too short - loads seem to end just when they're starting to really get going. It's good, just not excellent.

There are some albums that come out at just the right time, and this is one of those albums.
So many bands today are trying to do what At The Gates did 10+ years ago, and they're falling flat on their face.
If you want to hear the greatest collection of guitar riffs ever put on one cd, buy Slaughter of The Soul.

It is no surprise that songs like "Slaughter of the Soul" and "Under the Serpent Sun" are so influential and highly considered; their contorted riffs are far more accessible and expressive than standard death/thrash fare, but still pretty damn heavy. Once you listen to this album, it's hard not to hear inflections of it in every modern melodeath or metalcore album, only the riffs here are much more original. "Efficient" is a word that springs to mind regarding At the Gates' use of melody.

Lord knows I am no fan of the death metal genre. I admit it is too hardcore me, but melodic death metal I can handle. I guess it's because it's not "real" death metal. Anyway, this album is awesome, and a must hear for any metal fan. The album starts of with "Blinded By Fear" and doesn't let down after that. The guitar riffs are not as technical as previous efforts but still catchy as hell and the drumming is tighter and faster than ever. I recommend every track on this Gothenburg melodic death masterpiece, even the two short instrumentals that are easily the two worst songs on the album, but still worth hearing because after all this is the best metal album to come out of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Brutal powerful and rediculously awesome. I really enjoy this album, it gets me pumped up and stands s one of the greatest melodic death metal albums in creation (leaning more towards the death metal side then melodic).
I still prefer in flames earlier stuff for my hardcoreness but this is just brutal and intense. Truely worthy of being called the bands magnus opus

The change that started at "Terminal Spirit Disease" album was completed in this album. They added Slayer influenced riffs to their sound and the outcome "Slaughter of Soul" has become a Death/Thrash metal masterpiece. Unfortunately, this album has become the final album of At the Gates. Essentially, The Haunted picked up where At the Gates left off and recorded three solid albums, but never came close to the quality of "Slaughter of Soul".
This album is also one of the most influential metal albums ever. Tons of thrash/death metal and metalcore bands got inspired by this album and used it as a recipe. Unfortunately, most of them failed to improve upon this album and most of these bands sounded the same and have all become At the Gates rip-offs. So, if you haven't listened to this album before, keep in mind that these guys are the originals.

Slaughter of the Soul seemed to mark the beginning of At the Gates' widespread success, but it actually meant the beginning of the end for the melodic death metal group. Slaughter of the Soul is seen as a landmark melodic death metal album, and for good reason. It is far more brutal than Dark Tranquillity's The Gallery and In Flames' The Jester Race, and what it lacks in creativity it makes up for with its crushing sound. Even dismissing its influence, which cannot be overlooked, this album is a masterpiece of melodic death metal.
