3.0 good | Jared Floryan | April 13th 15 | Up until the band's newest album, Savior Sorrow marked the point where Mushroomhead started going downhill. Now try not to misunderstand me: this is still a fairly consistent and good effort from the Cleveland-based outfit, but it also lacks the intimidation factor and adequate creepiness of previous albums (namely Superbuick, because - let's face facts - that was MRH's magnum opus). New co-vocalist Waylon Reavis had large shoes to fill considering the amount of chemistry J Mann had with Jeffrey Nothing, and though he's got a tenacious range, Waylon has no other qualities to speak of. He was welcomed aboard to make up for Jeffrey's singing deteriorating in sheer power. At times, this album shoves experimentalism in our mouths just for the sake of telling us Mushroomhead want to stand out from the crowd; I didn't have to get this impression from past recordings, so why am I suddenly receiving it now? However, despite its flaws, MRH's fifth LP is enjoyable in medium-sized pieces and the instrumentation (though lacking in punches or kicks) is barely lifeless. Can we at least agree on one thing here, overall? Savior Sorrow pwns Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children.

3.0 good | bwomp | December 19th 07 | I found this album a bit disappointing in comparison to MH's past two albums. For one, I miss Jmann. Waylon is good at what he does, and his clean vocals are great when he uses them, but his harsh vocals have nothing on Jmann. Other than that, most of tracks here don't really jump out at you like their past efforts. Tracks like "12 hundred," "simple survival," "save us, and the first ever acoustic track "embrace the ending," are excellent. However, the rest of the album is average, and pretty forgettable. This is especially disappointing because I've felt that MH's music was extremely compelling.

3.5 great | mrfudgeyhead | April 7th 07 | Like an evolution in the world these guys evolev, and the only reason this album does not get a 4.5 is that as good as Waylon is that he needs a little more experience other than that this album is great it is the mushroomhead version of volume 3. I redefines but doesnt destroy it grows like a living creature and that's why these guys kick so much ass.

0.0 | Jom STAFF | December 4th 06 | While this album grew on me after subsequent listens, this album is still poor, especially by Mushroomhead standards. A lot of people were wondering how the new "harsh" vocalist, Waylon, would sound replacing J-Mann, who left the band to pursue other endeavors and take care of an ailing family member. To be honest, you can't really tell the difference, which is a testament of Waylon's talents, but he also gives Mushroomhead an opportunity to sing harmonized parts with other vocalist J. Nothing. This factor adds a moderate layer of interest to a pretty boring album. As always, the bass and keyboards/samples are terrific and the latter really add a creepy dimension to the music. However, the reasons I feel this album isn't as memorable is because they lost one of their guitarists, giving their music less crunch, and the fact that there really aren't any "stand-out" tracks. "Simple Survival" and "Save Me" are very well done, as is the first-ever acoustic track "Embrace the Ending" to close the album, but the rest of the album leaves an insignificant lasting impression on the listener, and is ultimately a very disappointing listen.
