Even though the fact that the ferocious Klas Rydberg left saddened me heavily upon learning it, Johannes Persson and the band proved to this loyal fan that they carried on and created an album that improves all aspects of their sound. The +4 long year process of the formation really shows the thought and vision premeditated and imposed upon Vertikal, an amount of time Earache did not give them. Real early to say, but in time Vertikal just might viewed as Cult of Luna's best record to date, if not their most realised.

it's an improvement on salvation, the only other cult of luna album i've heard but these guys don't know how to interestingly pace an album for their lives. i think one of the biggest problems is that nothing about this album really seems interesting or new, the electronics simply being an extension of what isis has been doing for years, the riffs being largely uninteresting, the vocals basically just sounding like isis but far less versatile and everything just being so crudely put together that there's very little to really appreciate in it.

How can someone give this anything less than 4.5 ? It's the most innovative album I've rlistened to in a very long time, it's music pushed to perfection, the sound, atmosphere, rcomposition quality is unmatched by anything I've heard in the recent years. Forget reverything you knew about post rock and post metal, forget everything you know about CoL, rthey're past albums were very good, but this... this is a MASTERPIECE.

Some of Cult of Luna's best riffs and melodic sections blended with some of their most recycled and boring post-metal moments. The wobbles in 'Vicarious Redemption' were awkward and unenjoyable, but they made up for it with an absolutely killer riff blasted out straight afterwards.

This album shouldn't be as special to me as it is. But with Isis gone, and Neurosis delivering a simply "okay" album last year, I guess it's just nice to know someone out of these top tier post-metal bands can still be counted on. I knew this album would take patience (as do most of their albums). So I wasn't surprised to see that one day at work after several listens, I could put this album on and practically every song has that enormous presence and elegant flow I come to expect from Cult of Luna. It's stellar and so very worth the patience. Recommended Songs: I: The Weapon (the clusterfuck song on "Vertikal"), Synchronicity (go listen to this song a few times and tell me if that drumline and rhythm isn't stuck in your head for days after), In Awe Of (best riffs on the album, instant classic)
