Even though the fact that the ferocious Klas Rydberg left saddened me heavily upon learning it, Johannes Persson and the band proved to this loyal fan that they carried on and created an album that improves all aspects of their sound. The +4 long year process of the formation really shows the thought and vision premeditated and imposed upon Vertikal, an amount of time Earache did not give them. Real early to say, but in time Vertikal just might viewed as Cult of Luna's best record to date, if not their most realised.

How can someone give this anything less than 4.5 ? It's the most innovative album I've rlistened to in a very long time, it's music pushed to perfection, the sound, atmosphere, rcomposition quality is unmatched by anything I've heard in the recent years. Forget reverything you knew about post rock and post metal, forget everything you know about CoL, rthey're past albums were very good, but this... this is a MASTERPIECE.

I: The Weapon, In Awe Of and Passing Through are among their best songs without a doubt. There really isn't a poor track on the record, but that said, much of the stuff just doesn't grab you the same way as the previous records did. Still, the album is well paced and an enjoyable listen.

This album shouldn't be as special to me as it is. But with Isis gone, and Neurosis delivering a simply "okay" album last year, I guess it's just nice to know someone out of these top tier post-metal bands can still be counted on. I knew this album would take patience (as do most of their albums). So I wasn't surprised to see that one day at work after several listens, I could put this album on and practically every song has that enormous presence and elegant flow I come to expect from Cult of Luna. It's stellar and so very worth the patience. Recommended Songs: I: The Weapon (the clusterfuck song on "Vertikal"), Synchronicity (go listen to this song a few times and tell me if that drumline and rhythm isn't stuck in your head for days after), In Awe Of (best riffs on the album, instant classic)

Some of Cult of Luna's best riffs and melodic sections blended with some of their most recycled and boring post-metal moments. The wobbles in 'Vicarious Redemption' were awkward and unenjoyable, but they made up for it with an absolutely killer riff blasted out straight afterwards.

From the beutiful, trans-inducing intro, to the various bursts and rhythmic plays, Vertikal is a magnificent album that encapsulates all things we expect from Cult of Luna, and still remains fresh as an artistic statement. Claustrophobia is the axis for CoL's music, and this is yet another example of their style. The belly of the album is the 18-minute long ''Vicarious Redemption'', that unfolds as a dancing drapery fall amidst a storm and by the end of it, you are left so amased, you don't realize 20 minute have flown by.

This album is half two things: either truly epic engrossing music (like holy hell the latter half of "Vicarious Redemption") or needlessly long uneventful passages that feel like musical exposition, but that's kind of always been the problem with Cult of Luna. If this were a television series, it'd be very divisive for its filler episodes and groundbreaking effects.

The coldest CoL album. The first two tracks and a half and the last four are fantastic and evoke cold, snowy rocky mountains and polar black peaks. Like a winter version of EK. Even the mixing of the vocals calls to that. I don't click at all with the middle tracks though. The electronic bits feel completely out of place, although I see where they were coming from and maybe it is my snowy nature read of the album that does not fit with it? Still felt kinda bored for those few tracks, among my least favourite sections in the whole of CoL 's catalog. Album is still a 4.0 overall

After the earthy sounds of SAtH and Eternal Kingdom, before the spacey soundscapes of Mariner, there's the alienated noise of the city: Vertikal. The human civilization's history could be linked to CoL's discography, and that shows us how very pretentious I am and how incredible this band is. Sound-wise, this is very monotonous, but that's what industrial life has brought to us.

On their latest album "Vertikal" Cult of Luna has released the best post metal album since the LPs released in the genres heyday of the mid 2000s. Verikal combines all the usual post metal tropes with a tinge of industrial and even electronic influences. This makes for an all the more interesting and unique listen and helps to paint a very bleak hopless image with the music. The listener can truly get the feel of a dystopian future from the instrumentation found all over this album. This is definitely an album drenched in symbolism and meaning that can easily be ranked along with the other masterpieces contained in their discography. Best songs: Vicarious Redemption, In Awe Of, and Passing Through
