4.3 superb | Trey STAFF | February 20th 13 | Who thought Soilwork could pull off a double album? Even at their peak, I would never thought Soilwork could write enough good (and diverse) material to justify the extended length. Surprisingly, though,The Living Infinite finds Soilwork doing everything right. They managed to merge the sound of their earliest albums with their modern direction without appearing contrived or forced. They also managed to pull off the double album by being smart and not turning it into an exercise in redundancy. The Living Infinite basically bludgeons the listener for eight tracks before smartly diversifying its sound with a more expansive, progressive set of ideas that pulls the album through the final twelve tracks. On The Living Infinite, Soilwork have simultaneously stepped back to their past while maintaining their current sound, but they have also diversified their formula more than ever before – and they did so without a single filler track. Based on what they’ve done since, this may stand as their magnum opus.

4.0 excellent | XfingTheSullen | February 25th 13 | Damn, this album was amazing. Those fuckers REALLY did sell out on purpose to make a bigger audience first, and then made a good album. Those dolts likely won't say it's any better than their previous ones, though

3.0 good | ExoskeletalJunction | April 23rd 22 | 18th April: Soilwork - The Living Infinite (melodic death metal, 2013)
I listened to this once, nearly a decade ago, and entirely wrote it off. In fact, there's a
likelihood that I didn't even listen to all of it, because it is 20 damn tracks. So I don't
know what I was expecting when my beloved spreadsheet told me to revisit it, but it
certainly wasn't any sort of moderate enjoyment. But you know what, this is decent, and with
a bit (okay, a lot) of trimming, it could even be good. The real feather in the cap here is
that they frequently deviate from the melodeath formula - sometimes into cringey metalcore
riffs, very occasionally into power metal bursts of speed, but often into rich melodic
passages more akin to goth, prog or alt-metal. At its absolute best, this sounds like a
cheap Chaos Divine knockoff, and that's high praise coming from someone who believes Chaos
Divine to be the masters of progressive melodeath. But yes, this is far, far too long, and
even with the variation that does take its toll. The metalcore influence is also a bit
tiresome, but at least they don't do breakdowns. All in all, I was expecting to totally hate
this but I came out with moderate enjoyment.
5.4 (2nd listen)

4.0 excellent | ChuppaC | December 3rd 20 | Definitely new to Soilwork and 7 years late discovering this album. Read some of the reviews here and once again do not hold the popular opinion. "Tongue" and "Leech" are my two faves. Dig both "Living Infinite", "Rise Above the Sentiment" and "Parasite Blues." "Spectrum of Eternity" and "Vesta" are solid but not as good for me as they are for others. The rest of the tracks are just ok, boring or can't stand the lyrics. But based on the quality of the tracks I really did enjoy, this album still stands at a 4 in my book.

4.0 excellent | FlurpSensei | August 15th 15 | Soilwork's best release to date (until topped by TRM). Best Melodic Death Metal album released in its decade. One of the best metal albums released at the time if not of all time.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Hastein45 | December 20th 13 | After venturing further and further down a more rock orientated road, they return with an album closer to their first 3 releases. And seeing as they released a double-album, it was an inspired attempt. The result: one of the strongest melodic metal releases not only of their career but in all of 2013. The album is chalk full of interesting melodic riffs; varied vocals(highs and lows); variation in the songs, both in tempo and structure; and drumming that fits well. Certainly a record worth listening to.

4.0 excellent | somerandomusername | August 4th 13 | "The Living Infinite" makes me wonder how can a double-album be so consistent. Soilwork release this beast of a record that is a promising contender for Album Of The Year.
Bump |
3.0 good | mkamrass | July 28th 13 | This album started out weak on the first disc with very few notable moments and then became stronger on the second disc. Overall, it still had kind of a generic sound with an OK amount songs where it broke out of the typical sound.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | CrazyBrave1982 | July 25th 13 | Ambitious and bold. This is a double album of confidence, as you work your way through the tracks it all comes together and you appreciate the musicmanship and sheer quality of the production.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | CrazyFool84 | June 28th 13 | While initially seeming like a total failure in the making, Bjorn and co. really pulled out all the stops in a triumphant return to the world of quality Melodic Death Metal. Soilwork's first double album, there is a plethora of great songs on each disc, with far less filler than anyone could've expected from a double album, never mind one within this genre. The band seems to have new life breathed into them here, promising at least a couple more records released in Soilwork's lifetime.

4.0 excellent | Curse. | March 19th 13 | "There have been a fair share of oddities to grace the metal stage of late, but Soilwork's
latest offering in "The Living Infinite" definitely ranks as one of the more outlandish
contenders for the title. For anyone not familiar with their history, they were of a similar
style of accessible melodic death metal as that of their Swedish compatriots In Flames, and
made a similar switch to a modern metalcore variant on the style in the early 2000s, much to
the chagrin on many core fans of the Swedish scene of the mid to late 90s. And much like
their often maligned counterparts, they've had a difficult time putting forth a terribly
compelling album in this style, though they've carried it a bit better and have avoided
becoming too similar to the dregs of recent American screamo outfits such as Trivium and
Killswitch Engage" fucking metal archives

0.0 | Topaz | March 18th 13 | A melo-deth album that just spells uplifting. Some sections of the album are a bit queer, and mainly found in the first half of this "two-record" album. The second half though is just amazing. The clean sections are a little superfluous at times, but for the majority of the time here, the composure just adds up to be a regularly comforting heavy metal experience.
