I was initially quite intrigued when I saw this had climbed to the number two spot on
sputnik, and immediately downloaded the record eager to hear what all these people were
saying about 'the future of hip hop'. The production from FlyLo is apparent from the onset
(even though it appears to borrow heavily from his latest in terms of overall sound) And
is likely the saving grace on this album. The opening track asks the listener how they
would feel about being the leader of a cult, which initially seemed like the premise for
the album itself, but after listening to the whole thing it seems less a premise (there
isn't really a story being here) and more like a nod to the cult-like fandom surrounding
Odd Future, or even more likely the new and mysterious "Captain Murphy". Unfortunately,
just like the members of the cult who appear throughout the album (in samples), it seems
that hip hop fans are easily duped as well into believing (the hype). The immature and
often vapid and uninspired lyrics contributed by Tyler(?) keep this record from being
anything close to "the future" or something that transcends hip hop. Hell, I wouldn't want
my name on the record either if the best verses I could create were about me being both
The Batman AND The Joker. Really? Boy. that's edgy, he must be a real tortured soul the
but I'm not falling for it. It's tryhardism at it's finest (or worst) and it really hurts
the album track after track. A fucking superhero movie is the most ingenious thing he
could think to reference AND sample? What a boring and painfully obvious choice. That
Combined that with the completely unnecessary sounds of orgy on "Children of the Atom"
which actually segue into "Jalapenos" (why?) really highlight just how banal this fucking
record is. And it just makes me want to cringe. I was really hoping to hear
something intellectually stimulating or thought provoking. The psychedelic artwork led me
to believe this might be something a great deal more than what it was. Unfortunately, it's
just the same tired rap trends holding it together. And it really isn't a bad record at
the end of the day. Anyone who likes Odd Future would probably be down for this record.
But anybody who thinks 'the future' consists of rapping about "hoes" "niggers" and
"faggots" clearly has no place deciding what it should be. I also saw someone had
mentioned that maybe DOOM was on this record? I have to laugh after hearing it, honestly.
It never once sounds anything close to him and After JJ DOOM I can't see him EVER signing
on to something this confoundingly meaningless. If you want a peek at the future... Go
pick that one up instead. Even for free, I can't see much value here. I'm glad they
decided to release the instrumentals - I'll be listening to those instead.

this is great, especially for it being related to OF, but idk i thought some parts dragged on for too long, while the actual rap verses were far too short.

This is the package deal. Killer production from Flying Lotus and Jeremiah Jae, anonymous rapping from seemingly many people, and HYPE. As Trevor said - this is definitely the future.

With the FLYest production and the LOwest vocals around, it's obvious who made this. A hip-hop genius

I have not actually heard this but I know of the concept behind 'captain murphy' and it confirms that flying lotus=objectively the greatest person ever.

He, FlyLo, takes a lot of characteristics from Madvilliany or just MF DOOM in general like the compelling, abstract beats and lyricism and makes it work very well. On the other hand, it could get better. A lot we've already witnessed and heard. A promising project from FlyLo.

Some good moments, but a fair few sections that just don't catch. Still, I'm eager for more.

Flylo does his best Tyler the Creator impression and it turns out to be way better than anything Tyler the Creator has ever done or probably ever will do.

Great production. Great concept as well as great lyricism from whoever it is whether it be just Flylo or any other person.
