Sludgy, Proggy, intense and one hell of a ride. I'm not surprised that Deftones is becoming more popular; their discography is too damn awesome to not be recognized.

This is a more subdued album by Deftones calling back at their Saturday Night Wrist days. Overall it's not as outright accessible as Diamond Eyes was nor as heavy and nu-metal inspired as their previous albums, but with repeated listens each individual song slowly shows its true beauty. Tracks such as "Rosemary," "Leathers," and "Poltergeist" are classic Deftones; in fact there's really not a weak link on the album. My only complaint is that the closing track(s) ("Goon Squad" is arguably the weakest song on the record) leaves a lot to be desired and is a fairly underwhelming way to end such a flawless record, yet in a sense it accomplishes exactly what it should in that it leaves you wanting more. I'd say Koi No Yokan beats out White Pony as the best Deftones album. They've finally managed to release a classic and they're not showing any signs of slowing down.

The older he became, the more often his thoughts turned to that story; his enthusiasm for it became greater and greater, and yet he could understand the story less and less. Finally, he forgot every thing else because of it; his soul had but one wish, to see Abraham, but one longing, to have witnessed that event. His craving was not to see the beautiful regions of the East, not the earthly glory of the promised land, not that God-fearing couple whose old age God had blessed, not the venerable figure of the aged patriarch, not the vigorous adolescence God bestowed upon Isaac-the same thing could just as well have occurred on a barren heath. His craving was to go along on the three-day journey when Abraham rode with sorrow before him and Isaac beside him. His wish was to be present in that hour when Abraham raised his eyes and saw Mount Moriah in the distance, the hour when he left the asses behind and went up the mountain alone with Isaac- for what occupied him was not the beautiful tapestry of imagination but the shudder of the idea.

Another great release that proves Deftones to be one of the most consistent rock bands out there. Koi No Yokan falls just shy of White Pony or Diamond Eyes, but as amazing as it would have been, we don't need them to catch lightning in a bottle a third time. KNY should hold a special place in the heart of any long time fan looking to open a new chapter in the band's long, astounding career.

In all seriousness, this blows away anything the Deftones have done on a musical level pretty handily, and that's no small feat in itself. White Pony seems almost simplistic compared to what Chino and the boys have produced here, and even the venerable Diamond Eyes and SNW all seem like mere precursors to what Koi No Yokan has to offer.

Although this album rode in on a hype train and was generally disliked because of it, it still manages to be one of the Deftones' best. Deftones can create an atmosphere that hangs over their album like no other band. We saw it with White Pony, Diamond Eyes and now again with Koi No Yokan. Chino's vocals and mixed with the combination of both metal and soft alt-rock is something only a band like Deftones can pull off, and there aren't any other bands like Deftones. Although it's no White Pony, it still stands alongside Diamond Eyes and far above any other Deftones release thus far. Brilliantly put together and atmospheric, Deftones do it again.

The immersive feel of the signature wall of guitars they have perfected with "Saturday Night Wrist" and synthesizer-laden nuances that permeate all the songs and fight their way to the surface, and beautifully so. the fantastic lyrics are never a problem here, either. The vocals are becoming a bit worn, but fit nonetheless. VERY well done.

Look I own every album by the Deftones and have been a fan for close to 20 years and Koi No Yokan is there best album. This really isn't the type of album you can hand over a 5 following the first few listens (albeit Deftones fanboys will surely disagree). I can't quite tell if this LP is a classic by any means, but its damn sure to be on repeat for the next month, so only time will tell. In comparison to other Deftones records, it's difficult to immediately spot too many displays of innovation in their songwriting or production, but I think the band has crafted a top 3 in the scope of their entire discography, nonetheless. The Deftones ability to constantly evolve while maintaining their core sound, integrity, not to mention their fan base is absolutely incredible. Not content to ride the caustic and rawer sound of Diamond Eyes, the band are more reflective this time around and manage to create an array of vast soundscapes that somehow manage to occasionally have an 80s feel without sounding retro at all. All of this is, of course, built around their trademark soaring vocals and waves of heavy guitar underscored by delicate violent outbursts. Overall though this is just another intricate and engaging affair from Sacramento's finest that no one should be without.
