4.5 superb | Egglord | June 6th 08 | I find this to be some of the best Zappa albums ever. It is funny, intelligent, irreverent, and unusual. That is all I ask for from him.

3.0 good | AndreasG | January 15th 07 | This is an album that SHOULD HAVE been great, but really isn't. Sounds like he was too lazy to come up with new material and rehashed old songs. The "story" line is truly twisted and hilarious in places (not for the PC crowd!). One of the Zappa albums I listen to the least, but it's worth checking out and drawing your own conclusion.

1.0 awful | pulseczar | September 11th 06 | Truly the most awful Zappa album I've come across. The storyline, which was originally intended to be a broadway play (fortunately it never went through), is incredibly plodding and boring. Though it contains moments of humour, it goes nowhere most of the time. It's based on a scientist who develops some sort of mutation device, but tests it on poor Southern black people. Somehow the plot turns to these people have to go peform on Broadway. That's about as much as I can understand...
It's narrated by Thing-Fish, who never really develops into an actual character, and just gives vulgar commentary and narration in a poorly developed Southern Accent. Dialogue between the other characters is usually better, but don't frequent as often as Thing-Fish.
The music is arguably just as bad, generically repeating as the story is told; not really a musical, now is it? Even stranger is that Zappa decides to frequently use overdubs from previous albums instead of new music. Occasionally there are quirky, catchy moments, such as "Clowns on Velvet". After 5 songs I couldn't believe this was actually a double album. Steer clear of this.

3.0 good | SsPpAaMm | July 28th 14 | Thing Fish is an odd album that probably won't appeal to very many people. There are so many different parts of it that are just simply openly offensive. I think that the album works well though in its telling of its little dirty whore of a story. So well in fact that I had to wash my ears out afterwards with soap and water. There is nothing on this album that really warrants being added to a "mix tape" but I don't think it was really meant for that. It was just an strange sick little story that Frank told me one day as I was on a two hour road trip alone in the mountains. When I hit play for the first time there was simply no turning back.

2.0 poor | StonesDoorsSabbath | October 22nd 18 | I agree with pulseczar. This album is torture (which never stops), as it's mostly just obnoxious spoken word monologues over plodding backing tracks. If it was meant to be a concept album, I don't understand what the plot was. It does have "He's So Gay" on it though.
