I LOVE The Way We Used To... but a lot of the other songs just blended in. Maybe I'll listen to it again and change my rating... but for now this is about a 3.7.

Her most beautiful and stripped down material, these songs are just exquisite. Reminds me of a modern day female Nick Drake or Peter Hammill.

Chelsea Wolfe has always been an intriguing artist, mixing the raw beauty of folk with the gloominess of darkwave and the haziness of ethereal wave, with influences from doom metal and gothic rock coming through every now and again, ephemeral though they may be. Unknown Rooms: A Collection Of Acoustic Songs sees Wolfe with her most stripped down palette yet, and though it's certainly a nice listen and has a true winner in opener "Flatlands", it's not quite as engaging as her other works. The notion that these were written while she was still figuring her sound and songwriting style out makes this easy to understand. The short length the compilation runs with doesn't really help things either, but at the very least it manages to be a cohesive listen, something that comps usually have a hard time translating. It's worth a listen, especially if you're a fan of the woman, but don't expect to hear much on the level of her full-lengths.
