4.5 superb | ILJ | September 21st 12 | "the fact this retarded statement has 16 bumps shows how retarded btbam fans really are, delusional fucks."rAnd "gay" having 23 bumps is somehow better? At least the other soundoff actually required thought and articulation. rThis album is easily the most cohesive thing they've ever written. There are still moments where they change it up seemingly for the sake of changing it up, but as a whole, everything flows together fairly well. Whether or not this matches up to Alaska and Colors, it's too early to tell, but rest assured that this far outshines The Great Misdirect and Hypersleep Dialogues

0.0 | Julianna Reed EMERITUS | September 21st 12 | Between the Buried and me have finally embraced logical song structures. Parallax II is a realization of what the group have been trying to accomplish with their last few releases, a progressive-oriented album with certifiable direction. Tommy Rogers' singing is much more prevalent here, as are heavy parts that actually succeed in being monumental. Overall, BTBAM's latest is a success because it not only hold the listener's attention throughout its 70+ minute duration but actually keeps the listener engaged. The progressive moments can be too much, seeing as how prevalent they are, but overall it's refreshing to see Between the Buried and Me altering their formula into something they haven't quite conquered before.

0.0 | DarthMann | September 23rd 12 | With this release, BTBAM has proved that they are the current masters of Prog. BTBAM may be
the next Dream Theater.TRACK 2: ASTRAL BODY: The second track from Future Sequence is
a peculiar yet musically intriguing song. The track begins with some odd percussion that
undoubtedly will seize any listeners attention. After the drum beat is yet another creative
riff from BTBAM accompanied by BTBAM's odd vocals. BTBAM jumps around in an odd pattern
vocally for the first part of the song which may considered a musical fault, however, BTBAM
greatly makes up for this possible musical blemish by implementing some of their best guitar
riffs on to this track. Following the second riff, is a guitar solo, YES A BTBAM GUITAR
SOLO. Although the vocals on this track are a little obnoxious in the beginning of this
track, it doesn't really drain from the musical excellence of the song itself. Another great
BTBAM song. 8.5/10r

0.0 | TheOscillat0r | September 21st 12 | There's a surprising amount of troll 1s going on. There's even an account with this being their only rating. rI do foresee a 3.9 incoming, which is shame because this dominates The Great Misdirect in practically every regard. There's still a decent amount of their typical heavy stuff, but their other side really shines here. They've gone back to a more standard form of songwriting with an emphasis on highly produced vocals. rLay Your Ghosts To Rest reminds me of All Bodies a lot and the only song I don't like is Bloom. That song sucks.

4.0 excellent | CrazyFool84 | November 29th 12 | Sounding like the most concise and entertaining recording since the bands heyday (arguably Alaska/Colors era) The Parallax II feels much less like the second part to the fun but confusing EP and more like a step back in the right direction. Honestly, this band has never followed a particular set of rules, and as time goes on their stray farther and farther from the convention, seemingly hellbent on squeezing in every possible influence that crosses the members' minds. But even amid all the stops, starts, changing signatures and proggier-than-prog mentality, this band is back to their entertaining ways, and that's a good thing. For what it's worth, this is my 1000th album rating on here

0.0 | breakingthefragile | October 15th 12 | Arguably one of the most ambitious metalcore-esque bands in music has finally managed to concentrate their ambition properly without giving either a bloated impression or a watered down one. On The Parallax II: Future Sequence, Between the Buried and Me has struck a fine middle ground between the technical death metal of their album Alaska, and their progression into progressive rock that was seen on their album Colors, that works to benefit both of these sounds in seamless fashion that doesn't seem like overkill. Parallax II manages to exchange fascination with originality for fascination with the band's technical prowess in their complex riffs and rhythmatic arrangement. Their influences are properly conveyed here, with melodic acoustic sessions and jazzy breaks working as a release from the relentless onslaught of some of the heaviest prog, that easily tops BTBAM's many prog-core band contemporaries.

4.0 excellent | PTRKoulou | September 19th 23 | A much more focused attempt to refine and define the style that later BTBAM stand for, with much less aimless musical wankery (though some tracks do suffer from that). The moments it does well, it does incredibly well (Telos is just what I was longing going into the album), but for songs beginning and closing as good as Melting City, it sure feels like the middle parts feel like purposelessly switching between ideas. It almost feels unsalvageable for an album so eager to boast its cohesiveness to stumble like that or just turn into Dream Theater/Mr Bungle for a song, before returning to what the album is really about. But I can't help but love the core elements that make up their approach this time around.
Bump |
4.5 superb | GamamJ | July 1st 20 | Surely BtBaM have peaked musically here. After the amazing Colors, and then perfecting the cohesion of their music from TGM, they have finally made it. After dropping their core influences on the Parallax EP, this follows suit with perfect flow, and amazing musicianship. Unfortunately it JUST is a minimal bit too long. If it were 50-odd minutes it is a certain 5.

0.0 | Blud Vidal | April 15th 20 | BTBAM craft an album that meshes instrumental prowess, the ultimate in progressive song structure, and a pervasive undercurrent of fun. This album is coherent and rife with compositional excellence, much more so than some of their previous releases. Parallax II shows that BTBAM excel the best when they cast off any notions of wankery and decide to craft a cogent record.

Bump |
4.5 superb | MoshedPotatoes | May 17th 19 | Few bands or artists can come close to properly executing a double album of this scale. Colors will always be the fan favorite, but the story arc that ends with Parallax II is one that will transcend generations.
Bump |
3.4 great | Erwann S. STAFF | May 17th 19 | Great modern prog metal record. This sounds less like a mess than previous albums. It's a tad long tho, the last two tracks are dragging too much.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | April 8th 16 | Acting as a sequel to The Hypersleep Dialogues, Future Sequence is a risky record. Having the average length of non-ambient and non-acoustic of songs be ten minutes, fitting an entire concept around these songs, all while playing the dexterous style of progressive death metal they play, didn't initially sound too promising, as BTBAM has always struggled when it comes to ten-minute-plus songs. That said, these songs, especially "Lay Your Ghosts To Rest", "Extremophile Elite", and "Telos" are among the most tight, well-structured, and fun pieces the band has ever written. The shorter songs, like "Bloom" and "Goodbye To Everything" are also two of the best shorter tracks BTBAM has made. Though it definitely does lose steam during the final three tracks, there's still enough solid moments during that time that keep the listeners attention to the end. Were it not for this unfortunate lull in quality this might've been their best record. But, while it's not their best, it is certainly a welcome addition to their ever-growing discography.

4.5 superb | Doomsday160 | November 24th 13 | I feel like I finally understood the album. The only reason this isn't getting a 5 is because of the two obvious filler songs, Autumn and Bloom. 4.0 excellent | SAPoodle | October 25th 12 | I'm not sure whether I should be taking these guys seriously or not. This album is the most fun thing I've heard all year (especially "Bloom") but it's ridiculously excessive. It sounds overambitious and the Dream Theater-esque wankery is a bit much at times - but if you take BTBAM with a pinch of salt and just enjoy the progressions and fun elements of the album it's pretty fucking great.

4.0 excellent | PowderedToastMan | September 27th 12 | Initial impressions:r$ This is ultimately what I'd expect from BTBAM: songs are tightly mixed and as eclectic as rever. Song structures are well composed with the exception of the occasional WTF moments r(albeit few, see Bloom), and a little bit of what some may deem "wankery".r$ Vocals around 6:30 in Lay Your Ghosts to Rest blew me away, even better that it's raccompanied with exceptional bass/drum rhythms and a jazzy lead guitar that blends into the roverall mix (this isn't Selkies, mind you).r$ That is some serious circus shit @ 4:22 in Extremophile Elite. Love it!r$ Silent Flight Parliament is by far the longest song, exceeding 15 minutes. I found myself rskipping forward to the 13:00 mark for a much needed break in the chaos, and though it's a rbeautiful segue for the outro, I was wishing for more of a classical piano breakdown.r$ FML, I can't believe I'm listening to this without proper studio headphones. The rproduction is great, as usual.

0.0 | someguest | September 21st 12 | All of their albums are right around "great", and there's no reason to think this one might be different. Besides, the band hasn't written an original passage in years. They just switch previous parts around and add some off the wall sound effects and a weird fusion of country. I don't know how much longer this is going to work for them.
