| 3.0 good | Andrew Gold | September 24th 12 | Simply put, this album is a mess. Muse graduated from ripping off Queen to ripping off Jamiroquai, U2, Skrillex, and even ripping off themselves. There are some great songs on the album, such as the ones where the bassist does the lead vocals, "Animals," and "Supremacy," but ultimately they're not good enough to overshadow the godawful singles and they still don't touch the worst songs off Absolution. Regardless, it's undoubtedly a fun album to listen to and if you're a Muse fan or are just in the mood for mindless pop-dubstep-classical influenced alternative rock, it's worth checking out.

| 0.0 | SowingSeason STAFF | September 27th 12 | It's actually pretty decent IMO; the whole album is bombastic and way over the top. It reminds me a lot of how Coldplay said fuck everything and finally decided to embrace all of their eccentricities. I know it's all over the place stylistically, but it's tied together pretty nicely by the sheer fact that it's all completely ridiculous. The riffs, for as few and far between as they are, are worlds better than anything on Resistance bar maybe "Unnatural Selection", but even that was derived from an earlier riff in their discography. The songs are catchier and more well put together, and I think it's because they finally embraced the fact that MUSE IS NOT A ROCK BAND ANYMORE and got down to making what they want to be making. I do think that this direction has limited upside, there aren't many places they can go from here. But at least they aren't trapped in that awkward-as-fuck purgatory between wanting to sound like Black Holes and wanting to do straight up glam-pop that was more akin to Fall Out Boy than it was to themselves. Fucking Twilight soundtracks ruined everything ;)

| 2.0 poor | MisterTornado CONTRIBUTOR | September 25th 12 | trying to enjoy this album is like sitting on the stool of a dirty gas station bathroom and yelling OCCUPIED to a deaf man banging on the door before he walks in relieving himself to be massively overweight and also blind, so he shuts the door and strips down until he's fully nude and begins to blow air into an inflatable barney costume he dragged in with him, which begins to block your exit as it grows larger and larger until your stuck watching a naked overweight blind deaf man blow up a barney costume until he can slip into it and dance around outside the gas station for spare change

| 4.0 excellent | ADAMWD | September 28th 12 | I was actually pleasantly surprised by this. There are a lot of solid songs, and a few great ones. No bad songs on this album, unlike The Resistance. In fact, more than a couple songs reminded me of their old material and would fit in nicely on those albums. Follow Me -> Showbiz | Animals -> OoS | Explorers -> BHaR/Absolution | Big Freeze -> BHaR/Absolution Supremacy and Panic Station are both fun, well written songs, and the two ending pieces mesh pretty well and provide some decent closure to the album. The only glaring negative for me is the lack of flow in the album, which is something Muse has always struggled with.

| 3.0 good | toxin | August 21st 12 | Fuck you, Muse. I was supposed to hate this album. Everything you released before the album rwas shit, and then you churn up cool songs like 'Animals'? Anyways, this album is quite a rstep up from The Resistance. It's easy to find flaws with how derivative (from Queen rparticularly), how cheesy, how bombastic, and how messy the album is. If you go into the ralbum with an overcritical eye expecting shit, you will hear shit. Personally, I had no rexpectations for this album but wanted to like it. And guess what? I liked it. A song like rthe divisive 'Panic Station' is clear proof to the fact. The song is by no means fantastic. rThere are several flaws with how cheesy the "funk" or whatever is. However, it's catchy, and rI truly think if you want to enjoy the song, you can do it. In this way, it's similar to rsomething like One Direction, which perhaps is evidence for how far Muse has fallen. rNevertheless, for me at least, Muse manages success in places where I expected none.

| 3.0 good | Alex Beebe CONTRIBUTOR | October 8th 12 | Sort of like an electronic opera, The 2nd Law is an over-dramatic, and at times over-
produced exercise in Muse's regular neo-prog symphonies that soar to the rafters, with an
additional handful of tracks heavily based in primarily dubstep-inspired electronics.
Naturally, this makes the The 2nd Law a very unbalanced and incohesive album, as Muse
makes efforts to tread waters unfamiliar to them while sticking to the territory they know
best, but fail to find a central ground to connect their experiments and their definitive
qualities. And with genres as drastically different from each other as dubstep and symphonic
rock, the result is an uneven collection of contrasting elements and sounds that don't
compliment each other or even work too well together for that matter. Though the execution
and presentation of Muse's ideas on The 2nd Law is clumsy, the tracks are still
somewhat interesting and enjoyable for what they are. The guitar tracks provide the grand
arena rock sound Muse has established for themselves, and while the synth-laden dance music-
infused songs are train wrecks for the most part, there is still something of a peculiar
entertainment to be found in that they display Muse's most severe change to their sound yet.
Overall, the most respectable trait about this album is how it mainly shows that Muse are
always trying to push their sound in new directions, even if they're largely unsuccessful in
doing so.

| 4.5 superb | Schlangengift | September 26th 12 | Not gonna lie, some of the tracks had me smirking. And while definitely not their best album I find their usage of electronics to be second to none. A solid approach though. But that's just me...

| 3.0 good | gryndstone | September 25th 12 | It seems there's actually too much variety for anyone to really enjoy this. Consistency isn't a word The 2nd Law has in its vocabulary, despite the deceptively named "Prelude", leading one to believe they are at the meat of the album, when really it's the worst part. I liked Panic Station and The 2nd Law songs, though. And I kind of liked Madness don't judge me

| 3.0 good | Matt Harrison | September 24th 12 | I thought this would be absolutely terrible based on "Madness", "Survival", and "Unsustainable", and those are for sure, but the songs that the bassist sings in (also wrote?) are actually pretty good and not Muse-like at all, which is a good thing. Some of the other songs suck like "Supremacy" and "Panic Stations", but the album overall is better (and seemingly less indulgent) than The Resistance. It's a step up imo, but nothing that touches Muse pre-2006 (though the bassist songs should hardly be compared to anything Muse)

| 4.0 excellent | oneirology | September 24th 12 | People have been bashing the album before having a listen, seemingly too quick to dismiss
the new album based on opinions of others, but I'll say its definitely 100% worth your time
for a listen. Being only my first listen, I feel as if I like it more than I did hearing The
Resistance the first time. And I know it'll only grow on me as I hear it more. Good music,
great step forward from their last album.

| 3.5 great | Drekorend | March 10th 13 | A well-varietized album taking queues from many genres, including electronica, funk, and symphonic rock, to Queen-like songs like Survival, and some unfortunate dubstep. The band really let loose on this album, in ways good and bad.
Bump |
| 1.5 very poor | Daniel White | February 4th 13 | Muse experiments with their sound on almost every song. Though most of the time it doesn't reach to the heights they want, The 2nd Law is still better (marginally) than their previous album. There is definitely a couple classic Muse songs off this album to make a very short EP.
Bump |
| 1.5 very poor | Polyethylene | January 1st 13 | Muse's trashy mix of cheesy guitar riffs, space-themed lyrics and Freddie Mercury-style histrionics can at times be great fun to listen to. On The 2nd Law however the cheese and the drama is cranked to 11, totally at the cost of any enjoyment. This album is almost entirely forgettable, save for the couple of tracks (Survival, Unsustainable) where the band verges into unlistenable territory. The addition of wobble bass on tracks such as Madness, Follow Me and Unsustainable (funnily enough the three singles thus far) was a soulless and ineffective attempt to jump on the dubstep bandwagon, yielding results more tragic than anything else. Stay way clear of this, folks.

| 2.5 average | Mr. Coffee | October 4th 12 | I was expecting a giant turd, but this isn't as bad as its haters claim to be. It actually has some pretty good tracks ("Madness" is a great song and "Supremacy" has some damn good moments). The problem is that for some reason Mr. Bellamy here likes to fuck things up with some stupid over-the-top arrangements and multi-layered vocals that drag the whole album down. And there are some just plain awful songs like "Survival" and the title tracks. Otherwise, The 2nd Law it's an average effort, way better than the suckfest that was The Resistance. But still, far from good.

| 4.0 excellent | TheNotrap | October 4th 12 | Exploring diverse musical textures such as funk, dubstep or 80's pop-rock (Queen or The Power Station come to mind) Matt Bellamy & Co managed to release yet another interesting and unpredictable release. "The 2nd Law" may not have the irreverence and energy of Origin of Symmetry or Absolution but it certainly deserves our open-minded attention.

| 2.5 average | Mark Campbell | September 24th 12 | Somehow manages to be better and worse then The Resistance. Matt learned how to play guitar again but forgot how to write good songs, it seems. And did they replace their drummer with a robot? Supremacy, Animals, Survival and Isolated System are pretty good, the rest is pretty forgettable (in the case of Unsustainable, just unforgivably bad) or just better-done on their other albums. Bellamy's riffs are pretty much the only thing keeping this from being a giant pile of shit. Muse, might be time to hang it up.
