Most logical direction for him to take, career-wise. It's a combination of his two most rpopular and well-received albums, Addicted and Deconstruction. It has a soul, and isn't such ra pretentious offering as Ghost was.

For everything Devin's done previously (especially under the "Project" label), Epicloud comes across as safe, soulless, and, frankly, a little boring. "Kingdom" is easily the most memorable track on the album and it's a re-recording, while the best of the rest are "More!" and "Save Our Now." Other tracks like "Lucky Animals" and "Grace" come across as b-sides from previous project outings that lack the same kind of personal passion. While the quartet of Ki, Ghost, Addicted, and Deconstruction may not have always had the most serious lyrics in the world, the arrangements were unique, forward-thinking, and easily some of the most personal and reflective of Devin's career.rEpicloud, on the other hand, seems like the stale remnants of those projects - forgettable, if not a little enjoyable in the moment.

Am I insane if I've given this album a 5 on first listen? Maybe I am, but I absolutely love this. Combining the catchy songwriting and style of 'Addicted', some of the heaviness and orchestration of 'Deconstruction', some quiet sections reminiscent of 'Ghost', 'Epicloud' is the sum of what Devin's achieved over the past three albums, with new elements thrown in (including the gorgeous gospel choir that begins and ends the album). There's songs like "Lucky Animals" and "More!" which are badass, fun goodness, and there's also more emotional sections like those in "Where We Belong", "Divine", "Hold On" and "Angel" that give me chills. Anneke's vocals are stunning as always, and the production is top notch ("Kingdom" sounds incredible!). Even if I've rated it so high so early, I know 'Epicloud' retain its (effervescent) quality. At first, this might seem like the perfect album. Combining heaviness with catchy pop
melodies with a bombastic production and songs that leave you with a "happy" feeling. But
upon further inspection, you realize these melodies are very familiar, we've heard them all
before (The melody of Save Our Now sounds dangerously similar to The Island by Pendulum).
And while there is a lot going on musically, the instrumentation of individual instruments
can be very simple. For example, listen to the guitar in the beginning and verses of Grace
and you hear that he literally plays the same chord over and over just chugged in a
different pattern. If you can get past these nuances, it truly is a beautiful album.

Geez, we have albums released under the name "Devin Townsend", and we also got albums
released under "The Devin Townsend Band", and "The Devin Townsend Project". How extensively
over-complicated can a solo discography get without deviating too far away from the point of
solo work defining the artist themselves? And just how different can these solo albums be
from each other to justify being categorized under names that are not so different from each
other? Who knows, all that really matters now is that fortunately, Townsend's latest release
under The Devin Townsend Project name Epicloud is drastically different from all his
previous work both solo, and with Strapping Young Lad. It's a slick and polished album, the
closest he's come to mainstream rock and - dare I say - pop. While an album as polished as
this may be an area as of yet unexplored by Townsend and other metal guitarist's solo work
as well, the mainstream rock sound isn't new territory in general even if it's new to him,
and he unfortunately falls to some of the genre's conventions here and there. Still though,
even if it's sound isn't too experimental, Townsend seamlessly slides into this poppy new
sound, and most pop music would sound a hell of a lot better if it was helmed by Townsend as
skillfully as it is here on Epicloud.

This definitely isn't a "Classic" worthy of a 5, but it's still nothing to sneeze at. Put simply it is "Addicted pt. 2", if you absolutely loved his work on that then you'll absolutely love this. If you prefer his heavier or more progressive works like City or Ghost, then this will undoubtedly seem a waste of an album. As for me I personally can't get enough of (not so)HevyDevy's brand of "Pop-Metal". 4.1/5

Album on its own gets a 4 from me, consistently great but nothing new for Devin really. Best
track off the 1st disc is Where We Belong in my opinion, sounds very Ocean Machine era Devin
and has a very nice chord progression. Kingdom, Liberation and Angel deserve mentions. The
Deluxe Edition edition gets a 5 from me, really amazing songs on the second disc, mainly
Heatwave, Quietus, Happy Birthday and Love and Marriage. Overall, this is an album that
really needs the second disc for it to be classed among the greats of Terria and Ocean
Machine: Biomech but great on its own if a bit lacking in some areas. 4.5/5

As some people have mentioned, it combines successful elements of several of his previous
albums. This should really bring together the people who liked Addicted/his other softer
stuff but not Decon/SYL and vice versa.
