At 55 mins, this album is a monster, and probably their most inaccessible album to date, but
c'mon, I mean,
IT'S CIRCA. I can't help myself from loving it.
Edit: Hanson bro, get with the times. BSN was released on Atlantic and this album is self
released. Your hate

Circa Survive just doing what they do with more experimentation and progression. Could be one of 2012's best.

I honestly cannot stress how painfully unoriginal and grating this band has become. Just because they don't sound like any other epitaph or equal vision band does not mean they're doing something new or exciting. Fuck this band.

A beautifully dark, diverse, devastating album. This contains Circa's OBJECTIVELY best
songwriting, coupled with greater experimentation and live-sounding production. Needless to
say, this all adds up to Circa Survive's best album to date. Open your heart and let these
violent waves spill inside.

This is one that I wouldn't prejudge by the early-released tracks. Sharp Practice turns out to be at the bottom
of my list of favorites. I find the most genuine Circa songs to be more in the middle to middle-end of the
album, where you find songs questioning faith, songs questioning family, and songs revisiting the Circa of

Found myself a bit disappointed. It's not a terrible album but it lacked the in-your-face vibe that makes me love Circa so dearly. Too mellow and weak wrist-ed for me.

Worse than Blue Sky Noise in plenty of ways. While I appreciate the atmosphere they put in - notably on Think of Me When They Sound - the whole album lacks a standout track. It's not engaging. It's never exactly 'boring', but the tracks run together and lack any attitude or catchiness that I was expecting.

Their most experimental and atmospheric album to date, Violent Waves is 55 minutes filled with spacey riffs, awesome bass lines and Anthony Green's trademark vocals soaring above it all. Definitely on par to be one of their best albums yet, and one of the better albums of the year so far.

Lacking the energy of Juturna and the pitch perfect songwriting of Blue Sky Noise, Circa's latest feels more like its uglier and blander brother, On Letting Go.

Standout songs: Sharp Practice, My Only Friend, Birth of the Economic Hitman. Still don't think this album comes close to On Letting Go or Juturna, but definitely a step up from Blue Sky Noise. The drummer has been getting progressively worse at creating interesting rhythms; Stop The Fuckin' Car and Kicking Your Crosses Down had drum riffs that really made the songs, shame he doesn't live up to those tracks.

Are you all being serious here? Blue Sky Noise was really nothing to rave about, especially when comparing it to On Letting Go, which I thought was far and away their best album. I don't know how well I like this yet, but at least it's a return to form.

Took the third listen for it to actually sink in as a great album. Definitely could be placed at the top of their discography and it's evident being label-free had a positive impact regarding the sound of this album. Lets hope being label-free has an impact on Coheeds next two albums!

If Circa run with the direction they showcased on Blue Sky Noise, then this album has the capacity to be among 2012's finest. And if the group decides to return to its yawn-inducing "progressive" roots, then color me disappointed.

A giant leap forward, Circa Survive create their own niche, relying heavily on atmosphwere and Green's outstanding, yet not overachieving vocals. Production weakest since Juturna, but it provides a breath of fresh air after the criminally over-produced Blue Sky Noise

I could not listen to this album all the way through. It feels like Circa was trying to emulate the sound and
aesthetics of their earlier work, which would be OK if they were still inspired as they were in the past. But I
think the band has moved on, as musicians always do. As a consequence, this album feels like absentminded
musings of a time long past. They aren't in touch with the emotions that fueled earlier work. The music is
boring, indulgent, and unintentional. It's a mix of what we've already heard haphazardly arranged.
I haven't given the album much time, however, so my impression could be off. Maybe this album is new
territory meticulously crafted together. It doesn't sound that way--shame. Maybe I'm just getting old and
Lyrically, the album is a joke. At first I thought they were ironic, parodying trite political, economic, and social
views. Then I realized there was no punchline. God dammit.

First Circa album I've tried. Couldn't get into it. They do have some interesting guitars, and Anthony Green's voice is a refreshing change but most of the album was just plain boring. Seven minute songs without any kick or any memorable moments. I liked "sharp practise" and "the lottery" but to me the rest of the album was fodder. Got to give them some respect for creating music that is unique though. Just not my bag I guess.

Although this album is lacking in a series of categories, the new album "Violent Waves" still keeps Circa Survive on top of the Alternative/Post-hardcore game. When I say this album is lacking, I am talking in comparison to past Circa album. I feel that the vocals aren't as there, the songwriting isn't quite there, and also a handful of songs here that are extremely bland. However, these flaws aren't enough to hold this album too far back. The hooks on this tape are pretty fantastic, and the usual catchy tracks haven't left Circa's system either. Overall, a pretty great album that just doesn't live up to their previous work.

It's better than a 4 and but not quite a 4.5. that's nothing excessive listens can't change. "Phantasmagoria" is perhaps the grooviest thing I've ever heard. This whole album is an experiment and it all succeeds. Still, I don't think it will ever beat BSN

Songs 1-3: "Holy shit, this is gold, keep it up! AOTY baby!". Songs 4-11: "Zzzzzzz...oh wut the album's done? Cool...". Typical. Goddammit Circa, here's someone who wants so badly to enjoy your music and you let them down every time with this inconsistency.
|4.0 excellent||Travis Montgomery | August 23rd 12|
In some ways this is a weaker album than Blue Sky Noise, in other ways it is far better. There is more depth to many of the
songs near the back end, but with that depth they lost a bit of accessibility. I wholeheartedly agree with what Sam Cowen said in
his review, it probably isn't going to win them any new fans, but for those of us who already are fans, are able to appreciate every
ounce of the progress they've made over the years. 4.0/5

People need to stop comparing albums. Any good musician or band who continues to put out albums should experiment and look to tweak their style. Look at Brand New. From Your Favorite Weapon to Daisy their sound has grown into something amazing. Stop looking to the past and just take this album for what it is, a beautiful piece of work from a great band. Just be happy they are still putting out music. If you don't like it as much as their other albums keep it to your self and just go listen to the album you like.

I expected this to be mediocre based on the song Sharp Practice.... was I ever wrong. This ralbum is so good and they've introduced a lot of effects and atmosphere to the album; even rdiving a bit into psychedelia. The vocals and harmonies are incredible, the songs are great rand the production is absolutely amazing.
