it took a 58-year-old man to finally create something massive and something new, something that didn't just derive off old influences but took all of them and created something truly fresh, something so modern and abrasive that it's actually scary. it took someone this far removed from popular culture to create 2012's best record. when michael gira says the seer took 30 years of growth and preparation to make, he fucking means it, and his honesty, his belief in his songs and his ambition, is evident in the gigantic pieces that populate the seer, from the 30-minute title track to the 23-minute "the apostate." but seriously: what else do i need to tell you but that this is simply the album of the year? just fucking get it. if not, then you fucking people make me sick.

One of the first albums to truly matter in 2012. Nothing else has left such an impact and
nothing else probably will. This album is a delicious bowl of several elements that I simply
adore in music and because of that, this album sits as probably my favourite Swans album to
date and in my top albums of all time. Michael Gira, you crazy sunnavabitch, don't ever slow
down.

This is undeniably the best album I have heard this year. This is a monument to the fact that as long as what you're doing is passionate and creative, you can get away with songs that 'go nowhere' for five minutes a time. However, its the fact that at times I have to actively tell myself to sit through sections that causes me to readily pick this as my 'favorite' album of the year, despite the impressive and often brilliant songs on it.

I love it. So dark. It hits you like a tide that's so strong, no matter how you fight, it pulls you under. I can't wait to listen to the rest of their catalog and I'll likely be bumping this up to a 5 after more listens.

Take no prisoners effort from Swans. I purchased on vinyl (comes with download card and cool poster). Sticking to running order required splitting all the long tracks across sides and in one case continuing a track on a separate LP. Minor complaint as it's done tastefully (if that work can be applied to Swans)

Swans have some great ideas here, but also some pretty unpleasant ones. Even if it took them a thousand years to construct this album, there are some really questionable choices regarding The Seer that really diminish the album's potency as a whole. The best moment of the album was, comically enough, the interlude "Song for a Warrior," and "Avatar" is the only example on the whole album where Swans' scope actually matches their songwriting ability. Those bells, man.rThose damn bells.

For some reason, you will no longer be the person you believed you once were. You'll detect slow and subtle shifts going on all around you, more importantly shifts in you. Worse, you'll realize it's always been shifting, like a shimmer of sorts, a vast shimmer, only dark like a room. But you won't understand why or how.

I don't think it'll matter how many times I listen to The Seer because I feel it'll still shock me years ahead of the release. This is something else. It's something that can't be compared to other albums because it isn't traditional by any sense of the word. There is no specific song structure other than; This album starts and it ends. My main problem is I simply can't afford to invest 2 hours of listening every time I want to hear it.

Gira referred to this as the "culmination" of everything he has ever done in his entire career. While i unfortunately have not heard anything else from them, I don't think those words are big, considering the utter size of this album. 'The Seer' is a beast, not in a "so good is beast" kinda way, i mean literally. It's 2 hours long, and there are moments were the wondering beats and ambient noises will go absolutely nowhere, challenging your ears. And yet, your ears will accept it, because it's subtle changes and often dazzling semi-harmonies wrap your ears somewhere that just won't let you go, if you are willing to embrace them. This is one of the best albums of the year, and if you have the pacience, then check it out at all cost.
