Fucking awesome, the introduction to death metal, the most evil thrash metal. The best death/thrash album to date, always will be. Every song is a masterpiece, but Pentagram and The Exorcist will always be the greatest out of all of them.

In terms of historical significance - the first real death growl, the genre naming closing track, etc. - this is probably worth a 5.0 but in the context of thrash in 1985, there were certainly better albums out there. So it's hard to rate this any higher than a 3.5, but that being said - it is still essential for any fan of old school death metal. Favorite tracks: Pentagram, Evil Warriors, and (of course) Death Metal.

First off Possessed isn't a pure death metal band. Theyre tried and true thrash metal with death-tinged vocals (yes there is a difference although you yourself wouldn't know it). and that makes sense they're your favorite since the only genre you're somewhat knowledgeable in (being generous here) is thrash.

Never been a big fan of ye olde school dm/bm or thrash for that matter, but this is OK. It's thrashy enough that it makes up for the awkward drumming and timing, and heavy and aggressive enough (vox r wow gud) to make up for the fact that it's largely thrash metal. Death metal m/

Obviously it has influenced a lot of bands, but objectively this is a very boring slab of fast metal that doesn't hold your attention and has no hint catchiness or memorability.

Though it never quite moves beyond its thrash roots, Seven Churches is undeniably death metal at a time when there was no such thing. For its time and its forward-thinking its unparalleled, but it does lack in certain areas. When it gets rolling, as on "The Exorcist" or "Holy Hell", its a vicious bulldozer, but at times in between its somewhat standard bay area thrash. A must have, but not perfect.
