I almost shed a tear every time I hear the title track. What a beautiful song. It's everything I've dreamed hip-hop could be.

Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music plants its flag high for all to see, imparting new life to the realm of hip-hop in doing so. Mike, via El-P's production, simultaneously channels the contemporary styling of Big Boi and peak '90s Ice Cube, drawing on the compositional prowess of the former and honing the powerful emceeing abilities of the latter. This blend of nuanced sounds and slick beats juxtaposed with Mike's engrossing narrative produces great results, and Mike's convictions are in plain view: "Mother fucker, my dad was a cop/You don't think I know a dirty ass cop when I see one?/Shake down, take down, disrespecting the badge!" ("Don't Die"). His words are poignant, and the music itself feels like some grand hip-hop revitalization; made to be be huge but fated to be overlooked by many. "Rap is my religion"

It requires a lot of guts to call your album R.A.P. Music and place the picture of your son on the cover. You need to take into account that your endeavour may be dismissed as overly straightforward or pretentious by an increasingly superficial audience. However, the new Killer Mike record truly lives up to its title standing for everything that hip hop should encompass in 2012. It's the kind of defiant rap that was popular two decades ago, but it feels surprisingly in touch with the economically uncertain times we're living in now. Aptly then, the LP abounds in anger, with Mike bashing an increasing commercialization of hip hop, dishonest cops and political corruption. The scope of interest in his lyrics is much wider though. His delivery often tends to be narratively inclined (JoJo's Chillin') or even greatly inspirational, like in the record's blissful, double-punch climax consisting of autobiographical "Willie Burke Sherwood" and the title track that's a poignant ode to the music that respects its heritage. It's not only Killer Mike who's throwing his heart and soul into his craft on R.A.P. Music. At one point he states "This album was created entirely by Jamie and Mike", acknowledging the enormous contribution of El-P. As unexpected a rapper/producer collaboration as it may be, El-P complements Mike's impeccable flow with his futuristic blend of Southern rap and soul to startling effect. The fact that the music has been crafted with hardly any guest appearances is only a testament to Jamie and Mike's genuine talent cutting through every single moment of this seminal album.

Only reason i heard about this album was because El-P was on production. "Don't Die" is my favorite track where El-P changes the beat after each verse from Killer Mike.

El-P's production with a southern twist and Killer Mike's smooth flow? Works for me. Now if only we could get him to stop saying such cringeworthy shit like "It's a book I read/Books I read/Cause I'm addicted to literature". That being said he has the ability to write some great lyrics, just needs to keep writing them throughout.

This album seriously blew my mind just on first playthrough, and I love it more the more I listen to it. I think this could be not just hip hop album of the year but possibly one of the best of the 2010's.

All I can say is wow! If Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was a fresh of breath air to hip-hop then has to be a genre-changing album. This album is like pays homage to old school hip-hop with it's gritty stories and intellectual lyrics. As a black man, this album spoke to me like no other rap album has in years. That alone makes this worthy of a 5

I am very pleasently surprised by this album. I have very low expectations for today's rap music, this wasn't helped by the cover(seriously, the cover is a joke, the guy in it looks like a fucking poser),but all the fuzz surrouding it here made me curious, i went in, no expectations what-so-ever, And was extremely pleased! The lyrics are excellent, the beats are really good and and and Mike is a damn good rapper, fast and energetic.
