During early listens I was quite convinced that all those whoas!, ohhhs!, and nostalgic exclamations of wasted youth were contrived-sounding - like this album was trying too hard to sound a certain way. Then I listened to the second half some more - before I knew it, I was blasting it in the car and yelling along like any other great punk album.

While there is a big handful of catchy tracks on this LP, the lack of anything different or even interesting prevented this album from being anything special. Even though the lyrics reminded me of late 90's emo (which I found refreshing) and the musicianship was tolerable, I felt this album lacked way too much for it to be great. Even though I definitely see potential in this duo, this album just wasn't the full showcase of that.

Washing their guitars in fuzz Japandroids deliver a stellar sophomore LP. With catchy hooks, sing along and empowering chorus, and simply fun music they continue the ideas of Post-Nothing with just a little more production, resulting in polished and upbeat album for the masses.

I don't really care if I'm supposed to rate things subjectively or not on this site, but this one, I really can't. Although it's not perfect in the sense that 'The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me' and 'White Pony' are perfect, it still seems almost flawless in my heart. The music is simple and the lyrics are cheesy, but that's what makes the Japandroids so good. I recently saw them at a small venue here in Denver, and they even admitted to having easy songs to sing along to. The complexity of the lyrics isn't what matters though, deep, meaningful lyrics aren't what makes an album stick with a person. I believe it was Hemingway who once said in response to Faulkner "Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?" Japandroids sing about going out, getting drunk, and having a damn good time, not caring about anything but the night ahead and the friends by your side. Complex or not, Japandroids will always know how to bring forth a sense of nostalgia in us all.
