Quorthon's The Return is another extreme influential record to the black metal scene. The Return of the Darkness and Evil is definitely the best song here. A BM anthem.

A landmark album for black metal and a big step up from self titled record. Altough it sometimes repeats itself, it's still a classic within the genere. It posses the rawness, aggresivenes and evil lyrics that would be taken as a template for most of Norwegian BM bands of the 90's. Altough it's still a bit different kind of music, somewhat transistionary, not fully formed and it may seem uncomplete for people used to most recent BM releases but it's very much worth the time it takes to truly appreciate this record.

Better production values, vicious riffs and vocals, and unprecedented atmosphere makes The Return of The Darkness And Evil a triumph for the genre and perhaps the darkest album ever made. Not their best work, but it's an evolutionary milestone.

The sound is little better than on debut, they just started to taking its music more seriously and made darkest end most evil record of that time. Return is a steady album with strong atmosphere, but i find it little bit draggy... However, Quorthon`s vocal performance is thundering again.

Venom without the sense of humor! Pre-"viking" era Bathory can seem a little faceless and by-the-numbers in its blasphemous imagery compared to Slayer, Celtic Frost or second wave BM bands, but that's an interesting thing about old extreme metal: bands all over the word were mobilizing to promote a CONCEPT, not their own "interesting" accessorization of the concept & rockstar pose. Why is this the best Bathory album? Because drunk riffs!

From a musical point of view in terms of musicianship, songwriting and performance, this album is honestly pretty horrible. What makes it valuable is the impact it made on the extreme metal scene at the time in which it shaped masterpieces that was soon to be.
