    April 21 10:41 AM
  • Kman418 yeah i feel you. i've actually felt the same way about the rating system, kind of sad how so much of the time you spend your time listening to music trying to pin some meaningless value to it instead of just enjoying the music, but **** it rating albums can be fun and that way people can actually see my taste so ehh
    April 21 06:00 AM

  • WashboardSuds I was actually aiming for a more standard review with the same descriptive style, kinda like my Smoke Room review, but looking back I can see where I almost missed the point entirely. I appreciate your encouragement, btw
    October 8 12:33 PM
  • WashboardSuds no problem at all, I appreciate you being honest above all else, it helps me work on my flaws for future reviews. you may or may not have noticed but I'm getting too "visual" for this kind of writing, being an art freak and all. I'll just have to adjust my style a bit is all, but I won't know what to do without criticism so I appreciate it.
    October 7 10:46 PM
  • ITsHxCTOASTER Looked at your profile for some reason, saw you ask Spirit for more Suffocation-like death metal, and now I'm gonna recommend Bolt Thrower, Funebrarum, Runemagick, and Abramelin. Even though they don't exactly sound like them, they have that same kind of feel (Abramelin the least but they have some killer riffs). So, weird circumstances that you're getting these recommendations from me, but let me know if you check them out.
    October 3 02:44 AM
  • TheSpirit to be completely honest, suffocation is one of the only big osdm bands that i'm not that into, so i don't really know many bands in that vein. nonetheless, check out this list http://rateyourmusic.com/list/TheSpirit/thespirits_osdm_picks

  • Jruined I still have a lot to learn. The best thing about working in some sort of creative profession (even engineering as I learned from my dad) is you grow every day if you are open to what's going on around you in your field.
    May 10 12:46 PM
  • Jruined I did. A lot of what I learned I took in on my own by simply talking to people. When I went back to school, I came in at the height of my professors professional careers and also when they were/are the most giving of their experience. They taught me how to refine what I knew. It's funny being in a class of kids who have no idea of how good their teachers are, and also understanding the fact that you only get as much as you give in a paid education (whether it's through scholarships/grants or
    May 10 12:45 PM
  • Jruined 17 christ. I think I'm avoiding feeling the years go by.
    May 10 12:36 PM
  • Jruined also, 95 in school, not 98. My memory is not what it once was especially when working on a deadline. So make it 14 years. Oh s***.
    May 10 12:34 PM
  • Jruined conscious not contentious. Spell checker sucks nuts.
    May 10 12:30 PM
  • Jruined Hahah. I've been in and out of college since 08. That was with 10 years of being in and out of college since 98. I'm one of those individuals where an apprenticeship or a skill based school (think tech school) would have been a bonus considering the skills that are needed. I spent a lot of my earlier years ****ing off and making mistakes. Wasn't a contentious decision but it worked for me. I'm a stubborn **** and have to learn through the school of hard knocks.
    May 10 12:29 PM
  • liledman thats awesome man, good to hear. if you get any videos or recordings of them i would love to hear it. i agree about minimalism; i like it to an extent, but none of the composers really grab me that much. its jazz performance, but its a pretty wide ranging bunch of subjects. im kind of getting fed up with the pressure of recitals and the guitar in general, and i think ill go more towards composition or musicology as far as any further study goes (it never ends! haha).
    May 10 10:58 AM
  • Jruined Yeah it's my primary income. I pick up part time jobs here and there when I need them (if commissions slow down), but I've only been working freelance for 2 years or so. Takes about 5 on average to get solidified, although I'm a bit a head on the bell curve so I'm not complaining.
    May 10 08:48 AM
  • liledman yeah definitely. i actually saw steve reich last week as he was in melbourne for this 'new music' festival (ie minimalism a feldman piece). he had a talk one night after a few of his pieces, was really interesting to hear somebody of that stature talking about his life and composing methods. have you been working on many pieces privately?
    May 10 02:23 AM
  • Jruined I do book cover/interiors, card art, and pretty much anything else people need an image created for. Here's my portfolio for an idea. http://jessedavidyoung.com
    May 9 03:27 PM
  • Jruined Nah. I'm an illustrator. Grew up in a family of musicians and engineers. Had Zappa, Miles Davis, and Stravinsky in my ear at an early age. I piddled with bass and alto sax, but mostly stuck to singing as recreation only.
    May 9 02:13 PM
  • liledman hey man, just been battling my final year and all of the positive and negative aspects that entails haha. hows your studies going by the way, you still doing composition? i see youve been listening to carter, have you heard his string quartets? awesome stuff.
    May 9 05:48 AM
  • Jruined Bartok is fantastic. If you are in the tri-state area (assuming you are in the states) let me know when you get the strings together for a concert, I'll definitely travel to check it out.
    May 8 06:18 PM
  • Jruined This Heat rapes face. Thanks for the rec. I'd heard A new Kind of water when I was younger. My uncle had that and a bunch of other good stuff but I'd never heard Deceit entirely. Thanks.
    May 8 01:55 PM
  • Jruined Nice on the Bartok by the way.
    May 8 12:17 PM
  • Jruined Is there a re-release of Deceit on vinyl, or do I just have to grab it on MP3?
    May 8 12:16 PM
  • BallsToTheWall Loma for some reason played in a tiny ass room rather than the stage, everybody Haitian packed in there and it ****ing ruled. Love the venue's no booze/no alcohol/no violence policy. Moshing the way moshing is supposed to be, crowd-surfing, great crowd participation and unity.

    January 30 05:22 PM
  • NeutralThunder12 really? i didnt hear that holy s*** lol
    January 18 02:00 AM
  • NeutralThunder12 yeah its not like it made no sense at all, but my teacher showed us how he composed one of his most popular pieces and it's really interesting how he came up with how the melody was gonna start......like who would think to just say **** it like that? hes a really interesting guy to learn about, some of his compositions are incredibly creepy
    January 18 01:58 AM
  • NeutralThunder12 Haha yeah, its hard to listen too some of that stuff sometimes but some of it is actually a lot of fun. Have you heard arnold schoenberg? guy would like just write random notes down on cards, throw them on the floor, pick them up in a random order and then arrange songs. Weird s***, but listen to the finished product of any of those experiments if you havent, which Im sure you have, but if you havent, some of that stuff is REALLY cool
    January 18 01:48 AM
  • NeutralThunder12 Insanely compelling stuff. Not just how it got started stylistically and how it evolved from ragtime and things of that nature but the people too. Miles Davis is one of the most interesting people I've ever studied. Classical is great too, I did a brief overview of the early musical periods like middle ages-modern age and found that the romantic period has some of the best instrumental music melodically ever. love that stuff
    January 18 01:34 AM
  • NeutralThunder12 The Argument in full, and some of Repeater a whileee ago. I understand the claim for the band fully, just not really my thing, at least at that time. Music History is really interesting stuff. Did a prettty massive unit on the New Orleans jazz scene and the beginning of jazz and was in love with the whole thing.
    January 18 01:18 AM
  • NeutralThunder12 Idk its hard for me to listen to a lot of punk but Im really diggin some of this more modern hardcore stuff now. I actually took quite a few music classes in college so far, so informative, I bet a history of punk class would be really awesome. Fugazi idk good for what they are, not exactly my thing though.
    January 18 01:05 AM
  • NeutralThunder12 Yeah usually people who are insanely into emo and hardcore pick Pianos as their fave from wave bands. I definitely love melody with my hardcore, and I think a lot of bands in who are part of the wave write really clever lyrics. Im really starting to dig other hardcore though, actually listening to Anger from Dangers right now and for someone who really doesn't like anything too punky Im having so much fun with it. Hopefully I can get a good download of IV too.
    January 18 12:07 AM
  • NeutralThunder12 i listened in full on youtube, gonna try to get it on my itunes. I did find some of it to blend together (which happens a ton in this genre anyway) but the atmosphere is ****ing insane. I usually tend to stick to more melodic hardcore and emo like bands that are part of the wave, or bands like Suis La Lune but christ this thing really took my head off. It's like a skramz version of you fail me. Impressed.
    January 17 11:33 PM
  • NeutralThunder12 dude that new loma prieta is EVIL.
    January 17 10:18 PM

    November 14 12:54 PM
  • Vesper Well, I'm glad you and your gf are okay, at least. I've been in a mountain road car accident before, and it's pretty terrifying. Anyway, take care, man. Sorry it turned out so terribly! :[
    November 13 09:51 PM
  • Vesper Oh, that's awful! Are you okay? What happened (if you don't mind my asking)? Missing the show just makes that car accident even more unfortunate. :c
    November 13 11:07 AM
  • Vesper Forgot to ask you, dude - how was the Ash Borer/Fell Voices show? I know I'm going to hate myself and get jealous for asking, but still curious, haha.

    October 6 09:16 PM
  • liledman aw man that sounds great. i live in melbourne sooo not much hope of seeing him. apart from a yearly jazz festival, we barely have any international jazz musicians touring here, if any.
    October 3 03:54 AM
  • liledman yeah definitely. has its pros and cons i guess. being 'good' in the classical realm is like being amazing anyway, but thats the great thing about composing... you can write intense things and get someone else to play it haha.
    October 3 01:54 AM
  • liledman haha yeah ive always wanted to play drums and piano, but i dont have the money or the room for either. been learning a bit of keyboard though which is uh, humbling to say the least haha. for jazz i wish i played sax... guitar seems to have this glass ceiling with dynamics/emotional range, unless you resort to effects.
    October 2 08:16 AM
  • liledman sweet. tbh i sometimes feel like studying composition as well, just to get deeper into classical in an academic sense, but i think ill forever have too many things i want to do musically... the old jack of all trades, master of none. i play guitar, which im getting more disenchanted with the further i explore avant jazz and classical. what do you play?
    October 2 08:02 AM
  • liledman **** yeah i was just listening to his quartets the other day, gone through 5 or 6 of them. awesome stuff. nice man, im studying performance. whats it focused towards, 'contemporary'/jazz or classical?
    October 2 07:49 AM
  • liledman cool ill check them out. i like both ravel and debussy, i think there is enough contrast in their styles to keep me interested in impressionism (though i certainly havent delved into it that movement at all). schoenbergs string quartets are a really interesting group of works, because they basically chart his musical progression; starting free, first serial work, then on into the abyss. probably my favourite of his works too. i remember seeing somewhere, you study music dont you?
    October 2 07:41 AM
  • liledman haha i get what you mean, though im definitely a big fan of schoenberg/webern/berg and serialism. ive only heard one or two of his piano pieces, and of course bolero, anything you would recommend?
    October 2 07:20 AM
  • liledman never gone out of my way to listen to him, but i know a few of his obvious pieces. you a fan im guessing?
    October 2 07:06 AM
  • Adabelle I like your pie chart a lot.
    September 29 01:05 PM
  • silentpotato none actually... altho i do like Carl Jung. im gonna look into that, thats cool thanks
    September 25 05:54 AM
  • silentpotato haha word, i like it, but i felt as tho it was quite underwhelming compared to everything else that i've heard so i don't know... ill have to see with whatever he does next
    September 23 03:24 AM
  • silentpotato wat are ur thoughts on order/pan snipe
    September 22 04:49 AM
  • chambered89 sir write more reviews u rule
    September 1 12:39 PM
  • sixthgoldenticket i thought they were still semi-active but maybe i'm thinking of portraits of past. check out 9 shocks if you ever want to, they're great. i really like cerebral ballzy, the album is pretty good and it's just a fun listen and a nice throwback to 80s hardcore

Crossover, metalcore, screamo, emo blah blah anything really. Just send me your email. If you don't want it posted here you can email me at bnurick13@msn.com

  • TheSpirit http://ivebeentryingto****upmylifeforyears.blogspot.com/ i haven't done anything with it in a few months but I've written a few more reviews for it and I'm about to make it active again. I know your taste in screamo is legit has ****, so I would really love to have aboard but if you can't its all good too.
    August 25 04:50 PM
  • TheSpirit Definitely will. I've seen it floating around for a bit now and have heard only good things about it. I don't know why I haven't checked it out though but if you think I'll like it, it's just the incentive I need haha. And I know you already post on a blog BUT would you possibly interesting in posting on my hardcore/screamo blog?

    August 22 08:05 PM
  • TMobotron Honestly I've only heard Skreamizm 1, 2, and 3 in full, I've heard a lot of single tracks though. I always heard Skreamizm was his best work so I'll prob check all of them out eventually. Exothermic Reaction has a cool b-side as well, Midnight Request Line and his In For The Kill remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKW1rsaKOnA
    August 22 08:04 PM
  • TMobotron God damn. I was a little tipsy posting last night so I'm not sure what happened here. Anyways check out those 2 I posted: Submotion Orchestra and Swarms. Also Phaeleh's new EP was awesome, and Skream's Exothermic Reaction single was too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KandVSZbZAM
    August 22 05:06 PM
  • TMobotron So yeah the first post I had were essentials in the dubstep genre, the second were just fun tracks. But I already checked out deafheaven, and SOME raein but not their latest so ill check that out and whatever else your recommended. But dude if House of Balloons is your AOTY you HAVE to check out jamie woon.

  • TMobotron Yeah hey dude I had a real comment ready to respond with but I closed out of the browser window with it so I'm left to recover on my own. BUT you should try where were u in 92 a little more- I thought it was ass the first few times I listened to it but now love it- it's a 4.5-5. I saw you had it at a 3.5, which isn't a bad rating but after a few listens for me anyways it grew a LOT. Anyways, here's some dubstep and electronic s*** I loved this year:
    August 22 08:05 AM
  • TMobotron time on here than i used to as well. I try to give as much love as I can to as many genres as I can but I def lean towards electronic stuff. Also- I have 0 expectations but Zomby- Dedication, Submotion Orchestra- Finest Hour, and Swarms- Old Raves End were insanely good. 2011 has been awesome for electronic music. Just Sayin. What's the best punk thing I should have heard this year?
    August 22 06:24 AM
  • TMobotron Word word. Suicide dreams 2 was like the best ****ing thing ever though. But yeah Jamie Woon is at least worth a listen. Some people didn't think he was as good as the other artists doing a similar style and maybe they're right but he still had some ****ing awesome tracks. And yeah I've always been a big electronic fan but now I've really found some blogs/sites that direct me towards what I wanna hear. Never been a metal fan and growing off punk and it's subgenres. But I also spend a lot less
    August 22 06:22 AM
  • TMobotron **** sorry jamie woon I mean, I saw james blake on your last fm and just went ahead and typed that instead. though he also kind of fits into that style too, just a lot more future-garage-y. Jamie woon is more straight rnb, but less about ****ing bitches and doing drugs than the weeknd. Check out an acapella version of one of his tracks from the album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sueXcHigJG4
    August 22 05:44 AM
  • TMobotron snipe, I used to run into you in some album reviews (skramz and hardcore mostly maybe? havent been listening to any of that recently), and you were a cool mother****er. Now I only see you if we're both commenting on The Weeknd. What the hell's been up man? And what's the new HTDW like? I remember we both loved love remains but haven't checked out that EP. And did you listen to James Blake's mirrorwriting at all? fun album with a similar style to the weeknd and htdw.

  • silentpotato dude, helms alee is a Hydra Head band with the lead singer/guitarist of Harkonen. The span of their two albums so far i'd say that they are like these arms are snakes mixed with austerity program, isis, kylesa, the locust, torche, and every other groovin stoner/experimental/sludge rock group you've ever loved. with amazing dual female and male vocals. but maybe im over selling it. both their albums are very very much worth checking out.
    July 18 06:32 AM
