  • theBoneyKing Check out my review of the new Drive-By Truckers if you get a chance. Album rules, more great alt-country(?; never know what to call them these days) for 2022.
    June 17 08:58 PM
  • theBoneyKing Hey Mathias, check out my latest review if you get a chance, another wonderful (alt-)country album for 2022. Heavy emphasis on the alt this time.

    March 16 05:33 PM
  • theBoneyKing Hey man, a rec for you: The Delines - The Sea Drift. The band are the current project of Willy Vlautin, the singer/songwriter/storyteller for the now-defunct Richmond Fontaine, one of the great alt-country bands. This group is still country-adjacent but has the wonderful vocals of Amy Boone atop Vlautin's lyrics and uses a gorgeous country soul-inflected sound. It's their third album put possibly their best and would work great as an entry point! One of my 2022 highlights so far.

  • Sowing It depends a bit on who you're trying to reach specifically! My site email is sowingsputnik@gmail.com and I will gladly pass it along to the others' personal emails, or alternatively, sputnikreviews@gmail.com exists although it is a mountain of junk emails where items tend to disappear. Either is fine, excited to hear what your idea is!
    May 4 09:08 PM
  • Sowing Dang, HH is pretty damn somber, so this must be some sad stuff. You always rec stuff I like so I'll check it out.
    April 18 03:52 PM

    April 9 04:23 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Got a perfect little EP that needs hearing. Francis of Delirium - Wading. A duo from Luxembourg making beautiful grungy emo.
    April 8 07:59 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey, you might like Vinnie and the Hooligans self titled album from 2014. It's some bluegrass punk. A lot of fun
    April 6 02:30 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Yeah summer is coming, so need to get pumped with some punky tunes. Start with the new Kali Masi - Laughs. It's a lot of fun.
    March 26 04:17 PM
  • SlothcoreSam It's a solid week for punk this week, new Kali Masi, '68 and Citizen albums. Then new singles by, Direct Hit!, Sincere Engineer, Signals Midwest, Bad Astronaut, Belvedere, Bruce Lee Band, Devon Kay, The Bronx, Mannequin Pussy, Iceage, McCafferty, and the best one here Joystick feat Zach Quinn of PEARS - 7675. Don't sleep on that one.
    March 25 04:36 PM
  • Sowing Sounds wonderful. I'll check it out.
    March 12 09:23 PM
  • Sowing Another country rec - Etan Huijs - The Monochrome Veil. It's a solid 4 for me, so don't go into it expecting an AOTY contender. Just a solidly enjoyable singer-songwriter style with some very nice harmonies, very breezy and relaxing. Don't force it to the top of your rec priority list, but it's something I could see you enjoying. Full album is streaming on bandcamp if you feel so inclined. Now time to copy-paste this for all the other country-goers here, ha.
    March 12 07:11 PM
  • Sowing You should check out the singles for Leon III's Antlers In Velvet. Not sure what to coin it as...Country-Prog? Pink Floyd is reborn and goes full Americana? I dunno. I reviewed their last album but the upcoming album is light years better. I need to ready my country crew and you're near the top of that list, ha.
    March 2 09:25 PM
  • someone need some spicy juicy tasty recs of 50-100 ratings. could you throw me an album or two?
    February 6 01:04 AM
  • Pangea Hey Mathias, this is a maximalist and quirky indie/chamber pop album that still manages to be cute and warm https://www.sputnikmusic.com/soundoff.php?albumid=387514 maybe you would dig?
    February 5 01:28 PM
  • SlothcoreSam That's alright DM, last year's EP was so powerful, especially knowing the back story. How's the social work studies going?
    December 15 03:51 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey the new Overgrow album just came out it's really good, and so are the earlier EPs. It might resonate with you, as a lot of the early stuff was written to help him cope with his father's death.
    December 6 09:12 PM
  • BlushfulHippocrene Yesss. Very excited to read.
    October 26 01:28 AM
  • BlushfulHippocrene Please review the new Keaton if you get a chance.
    October 25 05:09 AM
  • Dewinged How are you doing man? I haven't come around that Touché Amore record yet, but I can definitely recommend you listening to that new Crippled Black Phoenix, I have the feeling you will like it.
    October 13 06:48 AM
  • Dewinged Happy to read that man. It's a slow healing process, not gonna lie, and it never truly heals, but you learn to live with it somehow. Let your friends and family take care of you and take care of them, that's all there is, really. About Touche Amore, the one with a heavy theme is the previous one I think. I haven't jammed the new one yet but I'll let you know.
    October 10 12:25 AM
  • Dewinged You got it man. Rethoric question, but how are you feeling?
    October 9 08:52 PM
  • SlothcoreSam You should review it, my writing skill cannot give it justice.

    June 14 01:12 AM
  • Divaman Don't forget to vote today in the folk tournament.
    May 21 04:37 PM
  • Sowing Yeah I did a discog binge and got those averages up a tad, most of them were from 1 or 2 ratings from the same people who just seem to be non-fans. It's remarkable how an artist with lots of 2-point-whatever discog averages has crafted something that will now contend for my AOTY. Review is up, too - such a tough album to capture the essence of but I did my best.
    May 16 05:54 PM
  • Sowing Ok so totally unexpected but the new Jess Williamson is a phenomenal folk record with some slight country influence. I'm gonna review it as soon as possible. You should probably hear it.
    May 16 12:07 AM
  • Sowing That bit about statistics wasn't aimed at you FTR, it was at the person who was trying to use statistics to downplay it.
    May 9 03:10 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Nice, thought you might enjoy it. Mix of punk, bluegrass, folk. Once you get used to the vocals it's great.
    May 6 05:53 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Got an awesome album for you to check. It's thrashgrass, folk punk. Days N Daze- Show Me The Blueprints
    May 4 08:01 PM

    March 24 02:19 PM

    March 15 05:43 PM
  • Atari ooh, I see you bumped that Katie Pruitt to a 4.5!
    March 10 02:42 PM
  • Divaman Hey dmathias, have you got a song for us this month? The theme is "Winter".
    March 9 10:04 PM
  • Sowing I'm not entirely certain of the start date, but I'm 99.998% sure it will not happen in the next 2-3 weeks. Usually promotions happen in Feb/March, but things are getting pushed back because the staff are working on their top 100 albums of the decade. A good timeline might be April/May. There will be a news post about it at the time. If you think you'll be out longer than that and still want to apply, be sure to let me know.
    March 5 05:58 PM
  • Atari hell yeah, man! I really like that Pruitt but honestly I've already grown to love this Hailey Whitters album more..
    March 4 07:51 PM
  • Atari thx again for that Hailey Whitters rec - some lovely stuff. really love the opening track but could see the whole thing growing on me
    March 2 06:59 PM
  • Atari Defiantly....lol. *definitely
    February 29 05:17 PM
  • Atari She kinda reminds me of Natalie Hemby from The Highwomen with a touch of Miranda Lambert. You should defiantly check out her solo album Puxico if you haven?t heard it. Also, Interstate Gospel by Pistol Annies is up there with The Highwomen as my favorite country supergroup album
    February 29 05:16 PM
  • Atari I?m only on the first track but this is definitely my kinda country.. I?m sold on it already :)
    February 29 05:11 PM
  • Atari Sweet, I?m on it! Cheers
    February 29 12:06 AM
  • Atari YES! Good to know I?ve spread the word to the right people :)
    February 28 02:53 AM
  • Atari Right on! Yeah I?m prolly gonna have to bump up my score, can?t get enough of it right now
    February 27 06:42 AM

    January 28 05:06 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey mate, you got a Song Of The Day rec for us, the theme is Song Of The Decade. What song first comes to mind when you look back at the 2010s. https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=190263
    January 7 04:21 PM
  • Slex Hey bud, got a question for you regarding the Global Top 50 list but the powers that be want me to ask it off-site, could I message you on FB or email you?
    January 2 06:37 PM
  • mynameischan and actually, come to think of it, thrice's album to be everywhere is to be nowhere has several explicitly political songs if you haven't heard it. "whistleblower" about, uh, whistleblowers, "death from above" about drone strikes, "black honey" about oil dependency, and "blood in the sand" about nationalistic violence
    December 10 12:44 AM
  • mynameischan one of my favorite political albums ever is boysetsfire's the misery index: notes from the plague years. it's a bush-era album but still quite relevant today. from this year, good riddance's album has great politics
    December 9 11:42 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Here is a great EP from 2018 you will enjoy. Rainstorm Brother- Part 1 . This song is a highlight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RuJfdN7nhI
    November 30 06:45 AM
  • mynameischan their sound has changed a lot from album to album. i do think sing the sorrow is a good introduction but it's hard for me to judge it objectively since i've been listening to it for like 15 years lol. if you listen to that one and don't like it, it might still be worth listening to crash love or burials since the sound is fairly different. but all of a sudden they are one of my favorite bands.
    November 29 02:40 PM
  • mynameischan you ever listen to AFI? i've been obsessed with them for weeks now. sing the sorrow has always been a classic important album for me but i've been listening to their last 3 albums 2018's EP nonstop for like two weeks
    November 29 01:09 AM
  • Atari Also I see you like Relient K and Mae. Check the recently released Origami Angel for something similar. It?s not Christian themed whatsoever but it reminds me a lot of those 2 bands honestly.
    November 22 07:25 PM
  • Atari Have u heard Titus Andronicus - The Monitor? If not you should def check that one out. One of the best punk albums of the decade I somehow overlooked until this year
    November 22 07:22 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey, here is an album you will enjoy. a bunch of Female alt country, covering Tom Wait songs.https://dualtone.bandcamp.com/album/come-on-up-to-the-house-women-sing-waitsOr search Tom Waits Tribute on Spotify.
    November 22 05:45 AM
  • Atari Hey man, sorry I?ve been busy as hell but can try to give u some decade recs this weekend if you?re still interested!
    November 22 02:31 AM
  • mynameischan did u get it
    November 12 10:26 PM
  • mynameischan i see you have nickel creek's self-titled rated but not A Dotted Line. definitely one of the best albums of the decade. not sure if you've heard josh ritter, but either of his last two albums will be on my list. actually i have a word doc with tentative albums listed by year that i'd be happy to send you if you want.
    November 11 09:24 PM
  • Atari Oh I thought u meant you were making a New Years resolution to NOT listen to metal music lmao
    November 10 10:45 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Got a fun little EP for you, GVRDEN- Seasons. It's Poppy emo/Alt-Rock, and is influenced by your fav bands.
    November 10 08:54 PM
  • Atari what's wrong with metal :( haha, sounds good man! I'll take a closer look at your ratings and come up with some recs for you pretty soon!
    November 10 06:20 PM
  • Atari I?d be happy to to give you some. U thinking punk or country or what genre?
    November 10 04:09 PM
  • Trifolium Hi! The new Song Of The day thread is opened and you haven't participated yet. Care to join again this month? We would be happy with the recs!https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=189442
    November 4 07:16 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Oh and congrats on starting your masters in Social Work, my partner has her masters in Community Development, and undergrad in social work, she is currently teaching intro to social work at the university here
    November 4 03:19 AM
  • Atari Gotcha, just feels like longer! Love your taste and your contributions so keep it up :)
    November 2 01:13 AM
  • Atari Did you really not join the site until last December?
    November 1 07:11 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey, just found the Dutch The Wonder Years. One of the pop-punk albums of the year. Bounds of Modesty- The Family We Choose. The tracks, Casement Window, and, Remnants are outstanding.https://youtu.be/ar73feYGp5M
    October 31 04:21 AM
  • mynameischan and then there's "heaven" which is like country filtered through 80s pop or something. what a great album, i'm thrilled you liked it so much. the album before that is really great as well. some of her best songs are on there, namely "chris isaak" and "everything's gone"
    October 29 09:58 PM
  • WatchItExplode Appreciate the thought. I can't dedicate any time to a review until Friday and probably couldn't get something out until next week so fire away if inspiration strikes. March on toward contrib, you have to be next in line.
    October 29 06:58 PM
  • mynameischan sounds great, thanks
    October 24 01:13 AM
  • mynameischan you might like lydia loveless. her album called 'real' is one of my albums of the decade
    October 24 12:45 AM
  • SlothcoreSam The first Stuck Out Here album from 2011 is excellent as well, it has super raw production, but the passion, lyrics, and melodies are all there. Also check the 2019 album Devon Kay and the Solutions- Yes I Can't, soňo good
    October 20 02:18 AM
  • Observer Glad you dig, their Better EP from this year is also quite good. I guess id label it emo alt-rock
    October 17 09:32 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Oi, good to see you gave Stuck Out Here such a high rating. Even with all this great music coming out, i still go back to it. The lyrics are pretty personal and out there, check them out on their bandcamp page.
    October 16 03:03 AM
  • Lucman Nice! It grew off of me a tad but Lovemenot and Golden Hour are some of the best songs I've heard this year.
    October 14 09:17 PM
  • mynameischan yeah, they're a great band, one of my favorites. their first album is really strong too. "strangers" is probably the quintessential trash boat song and features a guest vocal from dan campbell (who produced that album). but overall i think "love hate react relate" is their best song.
    October 14 08:34 PM
  • Lucman Ah, that's sad to hear, man. I think her solo album edges it out but there's a lot of times where it captured me the same way that album did. Hope it clicks for you eventually!
    October 11 10:08 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey mate, i reviewed The Eradicator, but my review is full of question marks and asterisk, and i can't fix it. Any ideas?
    October 7 12:12 AM
  • mynameischan yeah, i don't see trash boat anywhere in your ratings but i'm actually most excited to see them (since i've seen TWY before).
    October 6 07:42 PM
  • SlothcoreSam I might review The Eradicator. on the LONE WOLF, they are from Netherlands, so i had to add them in the database, they are pop punk/ indie punk. Albums pretty good too.

    October 2 10:41 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey, so the best 3 are already dibbed, Lagwagon, Menzingers and Bayside. But there are couple of other punk albums worth checking this week. The Eradicator- Peak Eradicator, the last album was super fun, with nearly every song about squash. The band defines themselves as squashcore.Crossed Keys- Saviors, i need to check this out as i don't know much about them, just Joyce Manor produced itAlso some folky indie stuff, you might like. Elvis Depressedly-DepressedelicaLone Wolf- Together Alone

    October 1 01:11 AM
  • Dewinged Oh man, I did enjoy it. Some tracks are incredible. Low points are few and in between but all in all, really colorful and imaginative.
    September 11 03:52 AM
  • Dewinged Listening to Swain now, first track put me off a little but goddamn, the second one is really good. This gonna be a trip.
    September 11 01:32 AM
  • Dewinged It does! I love Bent Knee!
    September 9 02:01 AM

    September 8 09:28 PM
  • Dewinged I'll take it, thanks dude!
    September 6 04:46 AM
  • Rik VII That would be awesome, seeing musicals get more attention around here. I rated some Cast Recordings some time ago, but soon lost track . . . I actually have a lot of musical notes(/ratings in some cases) on a word document somewhere on my pc, so I might try to catch up with some of that. I noticed that William Finn is completely absent from this website, might have to do something about that some day.
    August 25 03:50 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Yeah it did that to me as well, i then listened to their previous EP, and it was even better. It's hard to keep up this year.
    August 20 12:01 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Just cause there isn't enough music out at the moment, you should check the new beautiful emo/punk album by Sunsleeper called You can miss something and not want it back. Great vocals, and touching lyrics, i think you will enjoy it.
    August 18 05:18 AM
  • ScuroFantasma Awesome, I appreciate the recommendations. I'll give them a try throughout the day.
    August 11 01:22 AM
  • ScuroFantasma It's probably clear I don't really know what I want haha, but I like the Western-sound aesthetic, more Morricone than singer-songwriter, if that makes sense.
    August 10 10:13 AM
  • ScuroFantasma Hey dude, can you recommend me anything kinda like Orville Peck, if such a thing exists? Or failing that, could you sling some of your favorite country recs in general my way? I definitely prefer a modern sound to "classic" country, if that helps tailor any choices (:

    July 10 04:59 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Glad you like it. When you have some spare time, listen to get immersed into their punkrock-opera "The Grand Spontanean". It is an epic adventure about the world ending because they discovered the last page of the Internet. There are guest appearances from Laura Stevenson and Chris Farren
    June 23 10:24 PM

  • theBoneyKing Absolutely! Check out Complicated Game by James McMurtry and In the Throes by John Moreland. Both a bit more on the Americana/folky side but phenomenal songwriting on both.
    June 5 12:54 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Hey man, thanks for the rec, spinning it now. Getting Coheed vibes, but it's still unique. Agree that the vocals are strong on this.
    June 4 11:41 PM
  • Lucman I think I may have listened to one of their albums at some point but I can't remember. Guess you can say I've never been a listener lol
    June 3 10:21 PM
  • Lucman That's a good comparison actually. A few friends have called him a modern-day C.S. Lewis. His records are so theologically rich, especially his later material. I'm not too big on his earlier, folky stuff but really his whole discography is great.
    June 3 12:45 PM
  • Lucman It absolutely is. You'll Find Your Way is a deeply personal song for me. The whole album has been a favourite for years. He's one of Christian music's most underrated songwriters.
    June 3 05:36 AM
  • Dewinged Oh dude yeah, Emma is a goddess. You mean like stuff similar to her music? Be sure to check Marriages (that's her side band). You can also check Emily Jane White, Dharker, or Agnes Obel. They are all different singer songwriters from Emma RR but all worth your time!
    June 3 04:42 AM
  • Lucman I'm happy to hear it!
    May 31 10:03 PM
  • Lucman Hey, man! You might like the new Citizens album, Fear. Also Be Clean Again by Heath McNease is a real solid hip/hop pop album.
    May 31 03:45 AM
  • SlothcoreSam Got another great new EP for you to check out, since you like Foxing and Brand New. It's by Overgrow, called "The Name We Share". Best emo release since Foxing last year.
    May 16 05:03 AM
  • Papa Universe your 2019 album to review is: Sarah McCoy - Blood Siren
    May 10 07:06 PM
  • SlothcoreSam Sup. Reading your great review of the new Kayak Jones album, makes me think you would like the new EP from a band called Antighost, entitled "Animal Panic! " . It is angst fueled pop punk, and it is my current EP.OTY.
