An up-and-coming rapper from the Midwest who is already collaborating with big names like Yo Gotti and Zaytoven – Big Six hails from Omaha, Nebraska. Dubbed the Nebraska Corna Hustla, Big Six has a unique style - half Midwest, half dirty south and he uses it to his advantage in this tape.
The production on this mixtape is ASTOUNDING. It sounds like it’s a highly funded, full-length album. With Zaytoven as a guest producer, you would expect there to be a letdown on the other productions. If you think this, I laugh in your face, because you are dead wrong. The productions range from high-energy, Nintendo-esque (Crazy Color Swag) to chill, strip club (In The Game) to futuristic alien (Position) to dirty south, trap (Craphouse). But of course it’s not limited to that. The entire mixtape’s instrumentals are very diverse and refreshing. It certainly helps that the production goes so well with Big Six’s rapping style. The beats throughout the entire mixtape are some of the best I’ve ever heard, A+.
The Nebraska Corna Hustla’s flow is very good. He has a clear, pronounced delivery; knows when to alter his voice; and he links his lines quite well to form a strong chain of rhymes. His voice is a tad bit high (relatively) but is quite pleasant. Unlike Lil Wayne’s
voice which is high and scratchy, or Eminem’s voice which is high and whiny.
Big Six’s lyrics are good, but not the best ever. They’re better than a lot of rappers’ though. He can be quite funny, for example on Not to Mention, “It’s okay yo/All day ho/Tryna touch more bread than mayo” But, most of the times he restricts himself to two subjects – drugs and money, he prefers the latter. But he can branch out into other typical rap topics, such as sex (Secret Admire) and violence (Get From By Me) He also gets in to non-typical rap topics such as life on “Point Guard” So, Big Six isn’t just confined to one specific topic, and can be quite diverse, but he does have a preference – money and drugs.
Big Six does appear to be much better in terms of street smarts than many other rappers, and this is evidenced throughout the mixtape. In Get Em Gone he says “…don’t talk on the phone or sell *** outcha home” and briefly mentions talking in code on Phonetapped and 1008 Grams. It occurs to me Big Six had (or has) experience in drug dealing. This boosts Big Six’s street credibility significantly, and adds weight to some of his songs and rhymes.
Like all other albums and mixtapes this mixtape has its flaws, but there are so few and they all are barely significant. The only thing preventing this mixtape being rated a 5/5 is the introduction, skits, promotions, etc. Mid-South Trappin is available for free download at DatPiff.com. i usually agree with your reviews to a good extent (.5 or 1 star away from your rating), i thought this album was decent, slightly above average trap rap and nothing more. The beats were good, but this guy's voice is layered so much its over-bearing, not to mention its kind of annoying as it is. The lyrics are mostly punchliney and well-written, but it's hooks are pre-mature and malnourished.
plus uggh OJ, why does Gucci Mane's least talented weed carrier keep getting work.
