Review Summary: An Album of Ups and Downs — But Mostly Ups

Pretty Hate Machine was one of the first albums to bring industrial music into the mainstream, and rightfully so. The album is strong in its music and production, although at times the lyricism is not its strong suit.

The album’s true power lies in the textures Reznor creates through sampling and synthesizers, demonstrating the ability of the analog synth to convey a range of emotions. Songs such as Head Like a Hole and Sin express raging anger in their vocal performance and their music, while Sanctified and The Only Time use bass lines to their advantage to create sensual scenes. Something I Can Never Have is a particular stand-out on the album, and is absolutely gut wrenching.

That being said, as mentioned earlier, lyricism at times is not Reznor’s strong suit. For example, lyrics such as “Now I’m slipping on the tears you made me cry” in That’s What I Get would be expected from a sophomoric emo album from the mid-2000s rather than the mature album I believe Reznor intended to create with Pretty Hate Machine. That being said, the lyricism also has strong points often throughout the album, with the cringeworthy ones generally being well interspersed.

Overall, Pretty Hate Machine stands out as an early mainstream industrial album that began the advent of industrial in the mainstream that Reznor would fully push with The Downward Spiral 5 years later. The album has weak points, but generally they are outweighed by the high points of the album, and the musicality of the tracks outshines the questionable-at-times lyricism.

This isn't a very strong closing statement, the whole thing is essentially just rephrasing your opening paragraph and it reads as extremely redundant. This is a really short review, I don't need to be reminded multiple times that this album helped bring mainstream media attention to industrial music!

Really interesting debut album. It's like a complete grab bag of debut album tropes: beloved, classic tracks that everyone agrees are among the artist's best work; A few songs that are average and rely too heavily on their influences; and a couple duds that are mostly only memorable for their cringe factor.

It's pretty far from being the best NIN album, and is certainly not TR's most important work, but there's enough awesome stuff here that you can clearly see NIN's incredible potential, and even get a taste of the band at their best. Due to the inconsistencies, it doesn't work great as a whole album, but I'll throw on 5-6 tracks at a time and usually love it. Every song has at least one cool bit to it.

It's a whole different animal live. I will never get tired of the various live verisons of Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, and Sin.

So true. And All That Could Have Been is among the GoAT live gigs ever recorded.

Down In It also absolutely fucks tbh

Definitely deserves a relisten sometime soon, haven't jammed the entire album in like 5 years at least oml

Also good review but yeah I always avoid reiterating the things you state especially in these short reviews, that is if you're looking to continue pursuing writing. I understand a lot of people just want a quick vent on their thoughts though.

Yeah im gonna have to change that. I adore all of Trent’s 90’s output but this never really stuck with me, but it’s very possible that the last time I listened to it in full was in like high school… so it’s been a minute.

But even then I remember going “damn some of this shit is cringe”, but as I’ve gotten older bad lyrics don’t really bother me as much as they used to. The one that sticks out from memory is the “you taught me how to kiss” line, and while goddamn that’s terrible, I think Trent is good enough of a vocalist to sell it.

The real question is, in the year of our lord 2024, do I go with the original or the remaster?

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever heard the original, outside of a track or two on my dad’s Walkman when I was a kid

don't know if it matters... remaster has like an extra track (cover I believe) added to the end

if I'm listening to my mp3s, I usually put on the remaster just cus uh it might be the only album in my entire library where I actually have both editions... but when I throw on my vinyl copy I can't say I can really tell the difference... maybe I just don't have an ear for these things

Yeah I just went with the remaster… not much changed. I still really love a few tracks here, there’s a couple more that I think are pretty decent, and a couple that I just really don’t fuck with.

How do you rate the rest of his discog pika?

I think With Teeth and The Slip are the only ones weaker than this. Obv with The Downward Spiral, Broken, and The Fragile being his best
