Bias is one of the things that plagues our modern world. People just can't give things a fair shake nowadays. It's left vs right, old vs young. CNN promotes more division than a 4th grade teacher. It seems like you can't walk down the street without running into someone who has an unfair bias against you, and bias is something we should all leave at the door. Jeremy Renner knows this well. Despite world-swallowing numbers at the box office, Marvel have long been the whipping boy of the cinema inteligentsia. Personally, I'm more of a Spike Lee fan so I've missed most of the modern Marvels, as it were. I quite liked the 2003
Daredevil, but that's for another review. Leave your biases at the door when digging into
Love and Titanium.
I say all this because if you've heard Jeremy Renner's name at all, you'll know he's associated with Marvel. I'm not sure what movie franchise he's involved with, and I'm an open-minded lover of pop music. Why would I not give this a fair unbiased shake? Seems like others are having a difficult time leaving their biases at the door. Well, not me. Renner has a great set of pipes. It's rare when an actor can also sing. I think they should remake
Singin' in the Rain with the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy, stick Jeremy Renner in there. He will steal the show. Baby Yoda would also be cool to see in this film.
Anyway,
Love and Titanium has a wide array of influences. This is not cynical outsider music product like William Hung or William Shatner. This is one man's bid for artistic integrity and we should leave our biases at the door. Why is this guy not allowed to sing R&B dance songs just because he was in Spiderman? Kinda funny to think that if Joey Ramone had become a famous actor before forming The Ramones, we might have scoffed at the entire project. Punk rock would not exist today if that had happened, and it's possible Jeremy Renner has a musical revolution of his own up his sleeves. We would be fools to miss it. Yes, there is room for improvement. The beats are often stale, but Renner's voice manages to carry us along the way. I would love to see Renner go for a more Tom Waits style next time around. Leave your biases at the door and give this one a fair shake.
