Spain, the land of brutality. Fascism and Christopher Columbus had many twisted shady dealings in the land of Spain. Yet unlike Columbus, Spain's death metal hidden gem Necrophiliac were not lost in uncharted waters. These boys knew exactly where they were going.

Drowned, a fine label, dropped this one in 1992 when the twisted country of Spain was lagging a bit behind the rest of civilization when it came to the death metal game. Thanks to Youtube and the internet, the hidden gems of old can be rediscovered yet again. This is death metal, my friends. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. The crying baby on the cover is in tremendous pain.

I particularly enjoy "Astral Corpse" and "Depressed in Crimson Climax." What a shame these young conquistadors of Spain never got to produce more hidden gems, or perhaps this was the one load they had in them? Many death metal bands went from twisted riffs to twisted decisions, but thankfully we never had to hear Necrophiliac do death n' roll or melodeath, forever cementing their hidden gem status as 1992 heavyweights of Spain and death metal.

It must be said that Spain's hidden gem Necrophiliac display no ego. There is a Spaniard zen quality to Chaopula - Citadel of Mirrors, down to its liner notes - here we see names like "Bongo" on vocal duties, and in a simple tribute to the peasant farmers of the countryside, "Miguel" is on guitar. They were in it for the music, not the accolades. No slight to Corpsegrinder, but would Cannibal Corpse have achieved such heights if the man went by George "Bongo" Fisher? Then imagine the difficulties of Cannibal Corpse trying to establish themselves under Franco. We can pontificate all day, but the truth is often difficult to ascertain. Thankfully, ascertaining is quite easy with hidden gems of Spain's Necrophiliac. Get lost in the twisted riffs, or simply get lost. Spain is here to stay.
