Review Summary: Genre blending and mindblowing!

Echoes of the Moon is really one of the best kept secrets in the black metal scene. From what I can gather, not many people know about this band at all. A one-man experimental black metal band from Chicago formed in the early 2010's, Echoes of the Moon has been putting out quality music ever since.

Esoteric is his debut album and possibly his best. This album is absolute cluster*** of a sound rooted in atmospheric black metal but also blends ambient, psychedelic, post-rock and shoegaze to make some of the most refreshing and natural sounding black metal you'll ever hear. Is it possible for a black metal album to be, dare I say, relaxing? Because that's what this album is. It puts you in such a hypnotic state that you just want more and more. Other bands try to blend genres to make "experimental" black metal but most fall flat on their faces. This guy does is effortlessly and to absolute perfection.

Bottom line is, Echoes of the Moon deserves a lot more attention. Not just here on Sputnik, but in general. This guy has been putting out banger after banger for almost a decade now and it's time for people to take notice.

Damn dude, just listened to some Entropy, sounds absolutely killer, totally a sound I’m craving right now. I think that’s the only one that got a CD release, will have to snag that up.
Have you checked Svrm yet?

Svrm is a Ukrainian one man folksy atmospheric blackgaze thing, definitely plenty of Drudkh DNA in the mix, but rawer and with a more urgent/tragic/devastating vibe. Prolly my favorite black metal of the last few years……

For sure, man! I think all his stuff is amazing but I would def start with the early demos/EPs. Total bereavement and emotional devastation.

Ngl the shitty prod on the drums had me a bit put off initially but the vox and sweet lovely riffs are unfuckwithable
